Fumbling The Future reads like a case study on how to invent a revolutionary product and fail at marketing it. The book provides a thorough and insightful history into Xerox and its research into digital technology. Although it provides detailed descriptions of important individuals, its plot is difficult to follow as its story-line is non-linear.The story behind the invention of the first personal computer was both a disappointment and a surprise. The disappointment culminates in Steve Jobs’s visit to Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), after which Apple releases a product remarkably similar to Xerox’s, but with a better marketing strategy. If there is a theme to this book, it is that the success of a product largely depends on a company’s effort and willingness to market it.The frustrating premise of the book is that Xerox invented the first personal computer yet failed to market it. Xerox had built the Palo Alto Research Center at a high cost, and many items emerged from that center that you would not associate with the Xerox name, such as the mouse, the graphical user interface (GUI), and Ethernet. Another shock was how the government was intervening with their work as they tried to enforce Xerox to abandon their lease-only policy. At that point Xerox would just be selling copies and not copiers.The authors emphasize how Xerox, held back by internal conflicts, lacked the flexibility to develop and market a new and innovative technology. The authors separate the book into major sections in order to describe the trends and prevailing ideas throughout the company's history [until 1988, the year in which this book was published]. They also provide thorough backgrounds for major, influential managers and researchers within the company. These references are sometimes illogical and often irrelevant, referring to a past year then back again unnecessarily.With so many important people in the book, it became difficult at any particular time to discern which person the authors were discussing. The book would have earned another star in my review if it had contained an organizational chart listing the main figures at Xerox, PARC, Scientific Data Systems (SDS), etc. The sheer number of seemingly irrelevant names made the story much more difficult than necessary to absorb. With the many figures it covers, the authors provide a detailed and insightful, but sometimes confusing narrative to the history of Xerox and the Alto.

Fumbling the Future, by Douglas Smith and Robert Alexander, is a detailed analysis of Xerox’s venture into the personal computer industry in the 1970s. Xerox, the undoubted leader in the photocopy business, experienced booming financial growth and no competitor stood a chance against the giant. Xerox executives realized that computers represented the dawn of a new age in office technology and an opportunity for immense financial gains. They wanted a piece of the pie. As a result, Xerox entered the computing industry and developed the Alto, the first personal computer. Additionally, the company created a technology research department and computer research laboratory to stake its claim in the industry. In a relatively short time, Xerox’s computer division was packed full of the brightest minds in computer science. On the surface, it seemed that Xerox would gain generous profits, but instead, Xerox’s computing endeavors lead to massive financial devastation.Under the surface, Xerox suffered from many weaknesses related to management’s poor understanding of how to run a computer business. This dragged Xerox into a downward spiral of poor investment decisions, mismanagement, disjointed business strategies, and conflicts among departments. When Xerox reached its weakest point, lawsuits and a financial recession drained the company of vital resources and began to dig a grave for Xerox executives’ hopes and dreams. The company suffered a colossal financial loss.This is a rich historical case study that retains its relevance today. Unlike many case studies, this one recognizes the human element of business decision-making and delves quite deeply into it. The text identifies managers responsible for Xerox’s poor decisions and explains how their personalities and their relationships with others influenced the company’s direction. This unique perspective is invaluable. Another positive is that the chapters are rich with contextual information surrounding Xerox’s actions and will not leave readers wondering why or how important events occurred. Each chapter is chalked full of clear examples of missed opportunities and poor decision-making, but also highlights effective decisions and how/when they turned into poor ones. The book will more than satisfy those who are eager for detail and hungry for context.A business reader who values succinctness may find a lot of the information superfluous. The abundance of detail can occasionally distract from vital aspects of the case. Readers may have to mentally weed-out less relevant details to gain a stronger grasp of the situation. Additionally, there are many different character names, which can make it easy to confuse protagonists. The book’s organization is not entirely chronological either. There are frequent jumps in time, which can result in a misunderstanding of the timeline of events and dates. The beginning of the book dives deeply into the technologies developed at Xerox and the technological evolution of computing. Although interesting, this level of depth is not needed to understand the case; some may find it excessive and tedious to read. Lastly, the latter half of the book becomes repetitive, as certain events are repeated from different points of view. Overall, the educational value of this book far outweighs its shortcomings.

This little gem of a book is fabulous: the format, the typeface and the anecdotes. Here in Provence I get a lot of visitors and while I know most of the markets she describes, and they are absolutely spot on, it helps to have this kind of a book to make it fun for everyone who comes to visit. The only problem is I've lost several and wonder if I'll get a discount if I order in bulk!And thanks too to Marjorie for getting the distribution IN France sorted before the summer season actually began. Just a little note for next year to those thinking of coming. Today is the 31st of August and we're all glad to see the back of what has been a very hot month. From now on, markets will be very busy but not as busy as July and August. If you can't stand the crowds and like to amble, come in the spring or autumn. And if you do come, here's a little plug for the best artisanal ice cream shop in France: visit Scaramouche in Cereste. They've just made the most delicious peach sorbet on the planet {Gwendal, and his partner in all things foodie - Elizabeth Bard, author of 'Picnic in Provence'].

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and it was the best help in planning my upcoming trip to Provence!Upon reading this amazingly well written book, we planned our trip to Provence choosing the nicest looking markets. We were not let down! We chose Roussillon as our base camp, best town to stay in!!From there we would wake up early and visit the market Marjorie suggested for that morning, and then we would visit neighboring towns in the afternoon.This was one of our best trips, and I must say this book really helped!!

I just received this beautiful little book in the mail, opened it and found myself instantly teleported to Saint Saturnin-les-Apts where I sat at a café in the late-afternoon sun, sipping an Amandine and bau frizzant, taking in the sights and listening to the tale of Monsieur Talon, the Truffle-King. This is a remarkable little book: part travel guide and part poetry, carefully researched and lovingly recounted. Whether or not you are planning a visit to Provence, Marjorie Williams will bring you along on a wonderful adventure!

My copy of Markets of Provence arrived yesterdayand made my day! After devouring the wonderfully presented information, salivating overthe glorious pictures of foods my imagination hadme traveling day after day thru Provence's markets!!! Bravo Marjorie, your book once againmakes for a journey high on my bucket list.

A well researched useful book for those who prepare to spend some time in Provence. My upcoming trip is planned in large part based on this book as the farmers market is one of the main attractions of going to French countryside.

A market specific book unlike something you'd find from Fodor's or Rick Steves. It's broken down into the day of the week on which the market takes placenta the larger days the market is open. I wish I had had this book for the times I've spent in Provence to make the market finding so much easier. Different days mean different markets for some villages and when you show up looking for vegetables and only find a brocante.... But as I have no return trip planned for now, I love reading through it and hearing of the ones I have had the privilege of attending. The pictures are a. Wonderful add as well. Definitely a must if you are going to visit or have visited these wonderful markets!

Great guide for travelers to make accessible and describe the best of the daily markets in lucid, stirring detail, but also written so evocatively that it stands alone as a great read for the armchair traveler! The photos and descriptions brought vividly to life my own memories from travels in Provence, and have made me impatiently eager to return.

I live in Provence for part of the year, love the markets and think I know our local ones intimately, but Marjorie Williams has added invaluable information about outstanding vendors to seek out and a great deal of practical information for first-time market visitors. I was happy to see that she had included smaller, lesser-known markets like Ste.-Cecile-les-Vignes, as well as highlighting the widely known big markets. In a weird way, Frankie is the perfect person to write a book about personal finance. He started from scratch and dedicated a year to learning everything he could to improve his financial situation and condensed 101 best practices into an easy-to-read guide. If you don't have a well researched and up to date financial plan, getting a year's worth of research distilled into a short book is a no brainer. I got the $3.99 eBook version despite not having an eReader (it turns out there's a free Kindle app) and now have a whole page of notes about ways to save and make money so the book has paid for itself.

This book is packed with tons of great ideas and information. Very relatable writing style and just pages in I couldn’t wait to read more. Already grabbed a couple new ideas to put into action in my own finances. Everyone can learn from this book but I will be buying copies for my young adult kids who this will be even more helpful to. Having financial freedom in life is so important. This book will inspire you to strive for that!

Everything you’ve been putting off forever is tackled in this easy-to-read and approachable book. Frankie guides the reader through each “dreaded” subject with personal experiences and learnings, making it extremely easy to follow along.Excited for the next one!

Quick Read Gets You Thinking About Your FinancesThis helpful little book can be read cover to cover in less than two hours, but it will take rereading and further research into the topics that interest you to fully realize the promise of the work. The author first details how he made a resolution at the start of 2018 to shape up the money aspect of his life. He tells us how much he read, researched, and implemented ideas, and through this book, he is sharing the helpful nuggets that he found of value.It starts with basic topics like getting organized, reducing expenses, bank accounts, and credit cards. He also discusses some ideas which may not appeal so much to us in this modern age but are important, like frugality, investing in yourself, and paying it forward. He also has tips on things like travel, insurance, and investing. The book is 101 little financial nuggets within these and other categories.The writing is not riddled with grammar or punctuation errors, and it was written in an easy, conversational style. I found the tidbits varied in length and quality. Sometimes they were short; sometimes they were long. I'm wondering if the length of the topic was based on the author's direct experience it. For instance, he gives us a glancing mention of EFTs and mutual funds, saying that he can't go into details about them, but then goes into a fair amount of detail about HSAs vs. FSAs.In any event, this book is filled with all sorts of ideas that, was a little research, could be just the sort of thing to help you get your financial house in order. For me, not everything applied, of course, but I still felt it was a worthwhile short read that got me thinking about my financial options and the possibilities that exist out there in the modern world.I received a copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

As someone who has struggled for years with debt, this book gives great information without being overwhelming for those who need the support. Most of the tips and tricks would seem simple but for those who need the extra push to get out from under the mountain of debt and shame that is associated with the debt.The author breaks the book down into great chapters touching on everything from Organization to Inventing to Making extra money to get debt paid down even faster. Real world ideas to help you honestly, not the get rich quick mantra that some others have put out there. I only wish I would have found this book years ago, I might not have had as many struggles as I did. I received an advance copy of this novel without expectation for review. Any and all opinions expressed are my own. 4 1/2 stars for this new to me author.

There is a lot of great information in this book. A lot of it is common sense and some things I’ve never thought of doing. Self accountability, through several means, is a great concept. Also, checking for money that’s out in the world, but legally belongs to you, is another gem. Really, how many people would take the time to do that? I would recommend this book and if you do 5 steps or 100 steps, I think this book would benefit anyone looking to make financial changes in their life.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I liked how this wasn't a get rich book but how to better understand your finances with tips and apps. You take what parts pertain to you and see if you can improve it.
