The book is a fascinating read for the specialist or non specialist. Johnsen gives us a well researched narrative that is powerful and compelling and certainly helps one to understand the crisis of Yemen better.Be careful not to expect any kind of analysis of U.S. policy in Yemen. The book, while providing an in depth story, does not come to a set of conclusions or policy recommendations. In the last chapter of the book, the story of AQAP simply ends, without any kind of discussions about the implications of the story the book has so painstakingly laid out. From reading Johnsen's blogs and other materials, it seems like he has quite strong (and very intelligently put) opinions about U.S. policy in the region, and it is a disappointment that these weren't included in this book.

The history of terrorism in Yemen and the limits of U.S. foreign policy in distant, unfriendly lands are the twin subjects of Gregory Johnsen’s excellent book. He is one of the most knowledgeable people in the West on Yemen, having lived, studied and worked there for years and is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Near East Studies at Princeton. Johnsen wears his learning lightly—he seems to know the history and current affiliation of every tribe, ethnic group and political operation in the desert nation but “The Last Refuge” is written for the general reader. Johnsen is a careful stylist but his language is exciting and he paints a vivid picture of how Al Qaeda has affected Yemen and how the people, culture and landscape of Yemen have affected Al Qaeda.Ali Abdullah Salih ruled (or tried to rule) for over 30 years although the government of Yemen never controlled the entire country and often only held sway over Sana’a and the area immediately around the capital. He thought it would be a good idea to send young men to Afghanistan for jihad and then begin using them against his only real opposition, the Socialist Party. He realized too late that while setting a process in motion may seem easy, controlling it or even influencing its direction can become impossible. Many young men left as idealistic defenders of Islam against invasion from infidels and returned as hardened Al Qaeda operatives, experienced in combat and unwilling to live under Salih’s kleptocratic regime. And so these returning veterans created Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Salih was happy to allow U. S. counterinsurgency operations against AQAP but since they consisted solely using drones to kill those suspected of being ranking members of AQAP. The missiles fired by the drones sometime killed tribal or political enemies of the government of Yemen instead of their putative targets and more importantly, killed many Yemenis with no ties to Al Qaeda. Thus was a poorly coordinated rebellion turned into a large scale insurgency.Events caught up with Johnsen—the Salih regime fell shortly after he finished the book but recent events in Yemen including the Houthi occupation of Sana’a and the collapse of the government that followed Salih shows the impossibility of accounting for everything with such a fast changing and unpredictable set of actors.Highly recommended as a detailed history and analysis of the growth of terrorism in Yemen and the U.S. response to it.

An incredibly detailed micro-level description of the people, the intrigue, and the exotic drama of the early days of al-Queda, including Osama bin Ladin, Ayman al-Zawahiri and dozens of others less familiar. The writing is fluent and compelling. One wonders how the author was able to get such micro-level detail. Surely not from publicly available documents and a few well-informed interviews. While all this takes place in Yemen, the book's laser-like focus on Yemen as a staging ground for radical extremists limits its attention to Yemen as an actual country. I was hoping to learn something about Yemen the country and was disappointed not to find even one chapter providing context on Yemen: its history, complex ethic divisions, geo-political significance, Britain's hasty departure as the colonial power in South Yemen, Saudi-Egyptian rivalry and sometimes cooperation in containing (and at times fomenting) Yemeni radicalism. It's a good read for those who enjoy exotic action dramas, but you'll need to look elsewhere to learn anything about Yemen or to understand the current turmoil in that country.

Insightful book on the US efforts to stop Al Qaeda and AQAP in Yemen. Gives an inside look at personalities, ideologies and conversations in clandestine meetings of major and minor players. Gives an understanding of how young men are recruited into terrorist organizations. The detailed information was very informative. Reads more like a spy novel than a history book. Greg Johnsen let the facts speak rather than give conclusions or recommendations.

I am very interested in this subject having read "The Looming Tower" which this author references extensively. The author tells and engaging story of Yemen and it's tribal environment. The research the author has done is impressive and his writting style is easy to follow. Be prepared for an enormous number of names which you will not easily keep straight. I would recommend this book without reservation for someone who is a serious student of this subject.

Johnson didn't miss anything in compiling facts for this work. It's hard to believe that it is even possible to amass so many facts and so much background information. I'm not aware of any other book that even comes close to giving such a complete picture of the events and societal forces at play in this complex country.

This book provides an excellent introduction into Yemen’s politics and the roots of its current troubles, as well as the rise of Al Qaeda in the region. For the most part it is highly readable and moves at a good pace - well worth reading for those interested in the topic.

Great comprehensive history of one of the least researched jihadists' hot spot, Yemen. If you are interested in the evolution of AQAP, or Yemen, this book is a must. Despite the dense information and historical facts, the book is so well written making it such an enjoyable and easy read.

A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy, by Thomas Buergenthal

From Publishers Weekly

Not many children who entered Auschwitz lived to tell the tale. The American judge at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Czechoslovakia-born Buergenthal, is one of the few. A 10-year-old inmate in August 1944 at Birkenau, Buergenthal was one of the death camp's youngest prisoners. He miraculously survived, thanks, among others, to a friendly kapo who made him an errand boy. Buergenthal's authentic, moving tale reveals that his lifelong commitment to human rights sprang from the ashes of Auschwitz. 16 b&w photos, 1 map. From Booklist

You think you’ve heard it all: the roundups, deportations, transports, selections, hard labor, death camps (“That was the last time I saw my father”), crematoriums, and the rare miracle of survival. But this one is different. The clear, nonhectoring prose makes Buergenthal’s personal story––and the enduring ethical questions it prompts––the stuff of a fast, gripping read. Five years old in Czechoslovakia at the start of World War II, Buergenthal remembers being crowded into the ghetto and then, in 1944, feeling “lucky” to escape the gas chambers and get into Auschwitz, where he witnessed daily hangings and beatings, but with the help of a few adults, managed to survive. In a postwar orphanage, he learned to read and write but never received any mail, until in a heartrending climax, his mother finds him. In 1952, he immigrated to the U.S., and now, as human-rights lawyer, professor, and international judge, his childhood’s moral issues are rooted in his daily life, his tattooed number a reminder not so much of the past as of his obligation, as witness and survivor, to fight bigotry today. --Hazel Rochman

I think it is my duty, not so much as a German (born to non-Nazis in 1939) but as a human being, to keep reading Holocaust memoirs. I cannot read too many in a row, but I read several every year.Yes, Thomas Buergenthal was “A Lucky Child”; otherwise, he would not have lived to write this memoir. But as Ruth Klueger points out in her philosophical Holocaust memoir “Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered”, the luck of the Holocaust survivors does not diminish the dimension of the crime, and the survivors cannot be used as “credits” to be subtracted from the great “debit”.Thomas Buergenthal’s story lets you shudder at how much repeated miraculous luck was necessary for his survival. Religious people will probably replace the term “luck” with other terms. Buergenthal, however, is not religious and attributes his survival to luck. All Holocaust memoirs (i.e., those that stick to the truth and don’t mix facts with fiction) are worthwhile reading, but one cannot possibly read them all. So I try to find those memoirs that are well written and provide some more insights than others. “A Lucky Child” is certainly one of them. Each Holocaust survivor has his or her own story, the story of an individual experience. And while the dreadful living- and dying conditions in concentration camps and on death marches in all of these memoirs are quite alike, the personal experiences differ. What also differs is how the survivors and those in their surroundings deal with their ordeals. What makes this book especially interesting is that the memoir continues after the war and tells about the author’s adult life. Thomas Buergenthal was able to overcome his, quite understandable, initial hate for Germans. He became a human rights activist and a lawyer specialized on international law, dealing with prosecuting war crimes and human rights violations.I strongly recommend the reading of this book. It should, along with some other Holocaust memoirs, be mandatory reading in schools all over the world.Other highly recommendable Holocaust memoirs are:Elie Wiesel’s “Night”Primo Levi’s “Survival in Auschwitz” (orig. title: “If This is a Man”) and its sequel “The Reawakening”—See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Ruth Klueger’s “Still Alive: A Girlhood Remembered”See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Peter Kubicek’s “Memories of Evil”See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...andTema Merback’s “In the Face of Evil”, based on her mother’s Holocaust survivalSee my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...One should also not miss “The Complete Maus”, by Art Spiegelman

This is the first book about the Holocaust that I have read.It will evoke more emotions than you can deal with at times. As a mother my heart turned to stone against the people that wouldcause harm to a child..Just as quickly I wanted to reach through time and snatch Thomas awayand protect him.It shook me to the very foundation I was planted on.Thank you Thomas for the courage it took for you to relive the horrors of the Holocaust.I am in awe of you and all the survivors. We are so lucky to live in America and we take for granted all the freedoms that we have here.I wish everyone would read this book.

The first 2/3 of this book was interesting, with a different take than most holocaust books I have read. It was here that the book should have ended, and gotten 4 stars from me. The last third of the book was rambling opinions on the state of the world, then a re-hash of the story itself.

I've read many books on this subject but not one like this. Mr. Buergenthal's tone is different from the beginning. He relates his experiences in such a matter of fact way that at times he seems to have distanced himself completely from the events. It's almost told as if he's telling someone else's story. In spite of this, the story is well written.

A great memoir by Thomas Buergenthal. Very easy to read and entertaining. I wanted to keep reading and not put the book down in order to find out what would happen next. The memoir definitely met my expectations (and was a bit eerie at times since I recently visited Sachsenhausen). Buergenthal's journey is an inspirational real life story about the human spirit and its strengths in difficult times, family ties, forgiveness, and beating the odds trying to make a difference in the world. Truly an example to follow. No matter what barriers are set before someone, Buergenthal demonstrates that anything can be overcome with determination, hard work, and a little bit of luck.

First let me share my disappointment that IS and I'M publishers spurned this book because Auschwitz no longer "sold". I encourage the reading this memoir and reflection of this survivor. I especially urge my Norwegian cousins, who must have enjoyed Nansen's Tommy to do so. Survival stories should always sell even when they are not as well written as this.

Such an amazing and powerful story! I am always humbled by the challenges so many faced at this time in our world's history. I am also empowered by their determination, hope, and sometimes great fortune in withstanding those challenges. This is story well-worth reading.

GREAT BOOK! Well written and very detailed without being oppressive with details. It was an “easy read” and quick to get through. Very captivating story and one of true triumph of a dark time in history. This was my vacation “beach read” and I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in stories of the holocaust and it’s surviors.

A nice little book that is easy to follow and offers great recipes. The recipes do not require specialty ingredients, they use normal kitchen staples. Great information on dairy free options. Easy, quick and healthy!

Lots of good ideas that I"ll be trying. It helps open your imagination for combining ingredients. I'll enjoy this.

Easy overnight breakfasts

I found a several of the recipes quite good and in fact my new fave was in here, too. Some were not good for my taste buds and some are ones you don't really need a recipe for, but it was nice to see and try some different combinations that you might not otherwise think of.
