I finally finished this book! I took it slow so that I could enjoy learning more about the Savior from this book, and it was a blessing to me, because even though I've read the New Testament many times, I learned so much from reading Talmage's book. I enjoyed it so much, and all the consummate research he did, that I actually went and got some of the sources he got much of his material from and put them on my Kindle. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand more about not just Jesus' life but his pre-mortal existence and his importance in our own lives. Most of the scholarship which Talmage used was actually from non-Mormon sources (the ones I got to read were both Christian and Judaic). So this book is for anyone who has an interest in learning more about the Savior. This is not a book you want to read quickly, or you will miss so many important concepts. I read all of the notes at the back of each chapter as well, and often there were little snippets of information in the notes that I did not know. I will have to read this book again, to extract as much information as possible, but it definitely made me more knowledgeable of Jesus the Christ.
This is a LONG, long work, and not one that should be "skimmed." It is, by far, the finest work on the life of the Savior, anywhere. Whether a Latter-day Saint or not, the insights about Jesus Christ are marvelous, and any Christian not of the LDS faith would still be greatly uplifted and educated by it, even disregarding the occasional specific references to Latter-day Saint doctrine. For the vast majority of the book, that is simply not an issue - it is biblically-based, with insights one will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The research and understanding behind the book is almost unbelievable, thus the tremendous insights on the Savior, his circumstances, and the world in which He lived at the time. For a non-LDS Christian, it would be helpful to know before starting, just a little about LDS beliefs about Jesus Christ, so that the book will make even more sense. Latter-day Saints do not typically use the word "Trinity" to refer to the Godhead. The LDS belief is that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are separate and distinct beings, but entirely united in one single purpose, under the direction of the Father, who is known in the Old Testament Hebrew as Elohim. Jesus Christ, as recorded in the Bible, was the creator of this earth, under the direction of the Father, and was known in his pre-mortal state as Jehovah (the God most frequently referred to in the Old Testament, but still always under the direction of Elohim). Once he came to the earth, he became known as Jesus Christ, and he routinely deferred to his Father (Elohim) when talking about his own works - saying that although he did them, he also only did what he was commanded by the Father, and/or what would be acceptable to the Father. Once resurrected, he resumed his place at the right hand of the Father, having redeemed the world He had created. The Bible itself clearly distinguishes between the three separate (but one in purpose) beings, such as Steven looking up steadfastly into heaven and seeing Jesus Christ on the right hand of the Father; or when he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane for the cup to be taken from him, but then deferred fully to the Father's will; or when he asked on the cross, "Why hast thou forsaken me?" He also promised to send "another Comforter" (the Holy Ghost) after He (Christ) was gone. And those are just some of the biblical examples that clearly distinguish between the three. Once that difference is understood between Latter-day Saints and SOME who adhere to other denominations of Christianity, this wonderful book makes even more sense. But even for one convinced of the three-in-one, one-in-three concept, the insights to be gained from "Jesus the Christ" are not to be found elsewhere, in their depth. It is a deeply moving spiritual experience. I also highly recommend obtaining it on DVD and listening to it, in addition to reading it. New and different insights emerge from the spoken word, compared to what is found in the printed word. James E. Talmage clearly had an understanding of the Savior that is rare to be found on this earth.
I originally read this book as a full-time missionary in 1979. It took me about 6 months to read and comprehend it. While it is not an "easy read," it is the best non-scripture doctrine book I have ever read. It helped me grow closer to my Savior and appreciate Him as my personal Redeemer.
Absolutely the worst publication of a book I have ever seen!Has anyone seen a Book of 349 pages and 42 chapters withNO Table of Contents, Chapter Headings, Index or Footnotes???!!!!You must scroll though every page and chapter to get to one Passage you want to read. IMPOSSIBLE!In my opinion, his publication is obviously a QUICK PRINT of a very Lovely and Sacred book. I hope other publishers take note! Very disappointed. This is a complete disappointment this publication is obviously a Quick Print of a very Lovely and Sacred book. Very sad and disappointing.
For some reason, the publisher decided to ink the cover of this book on TOP of the plastic veneer. I bought this book less than 2 months ago, haven't even finished reading it, and the gold ink that the title, border and author's name are written in is already rubbing off. I can scratch it off with my fingernail with hardly any effort. I figure by the time I'm done reading it, the book will be unidentifiable, with nothing left but the picture on the front. VERY annoyed, as this book is otherwise very well put together, and I spent the extra money on this edition because I wanted a nice copy that would last me for decades. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought this edition.
The book itself is a classic: a very thorough exploration of the life and mission of Jesus Christ, based in scripture, and incorporating the best scholarly studies available to Talmage in the early twentieth century. I bought this digital version to run on my Kindle Touch. It contains fewer typos than most digital transcriptions from classic titles. On my limited-ability Kindle, the footnotes appear at the end of each subheading simply as part of the "printed page" rather than as click-on links, but that didn't bother me.
