I realized as soon as I started reading Meant to Be that Lauren has a talent for fresh contemporary tales. I very much enjoyed Meant to Be, and I think Being Sloane Jacobs is even better. This fun story mixes the crazy identity swap hijinks of Parent Trap with the grit of athletic characters and a sassy style that's all Lauren. One of the reasons I rate BSJ so highly is that it's not your regular contemporary romance. Don't get me wrong; there are some cute boys and several tummy-butterfly-inducing scenes, but it's not the highlight of the novel. Instead, this is a novel that focuses on tough girls figuring out what they want AND going after it. Sloane Emily and Sloane Devon shine as double protagonists, each with a distinct voice and an individual set of problems and motivations, but they also prove that even very different teenage girls can still find common ground. Both SE and SD have major parent drama going on and both are shipped away for the summer so that their parents don't have to deal with them. Although it's pretty implausible that two teenage girls would ever actually be able to switch lives as (seemingly) easily as the Sloanes do, it really isn't surprising that they try, considering how disjointed they feel from their normal lives. The Sloanes are searching for something, anything to break the weirdness going on around them, but also, they're searching for their real identities. Is Sloane Emily simply the ice princess? The political darling? Is Sloan Devon just the rough-and-tumble bad girl on ice? The tough girl? By switching places, not only do the readers get to witness the girls in silly situations, but the girls discover themselves by doing things vastly different from what they're used to. It's incredibly entertaining and also pretty inspiring.I also like the guys, although they are minor characters. The boys are important for two reasons, and honestly, neither is romance (but again, the romance is so, so cute! See above-mentioned butterflies!). 1. Both Nando and Matt provide requisite body switch oopsie moments, which prompts the important discussions about trust and you're-not-who-I-thought-you-were (LITERALLY) moments, and 2. the guys provide additional examples of the many ways in which a person can change, even in a very short amount of time. Everybody has a past, and all four of these characters (SD, SE, Nando, and Matt) are trying in some way to move on from things in theirs. I really like the way Lauren writes them all almost as foils to one another, but again, she also focuses on the ways in which their similar. It speaks volumes to her character development that she carries this not only through her main characters, but also to the love interests and minor characters as well.Basically, Being Sloane Jacobs is a novel that will have you laughing the whole time you're reading. It's so much fun, and even if you aren't a sports superfan like I am, you'll enjoy all the sporty shenanigans on and off the ice. At the same time, you'll find a deeper connection with the characters and be able to sympathize with the Real Life demons chasing after them. Lauren's writing is strong, both witty and emotional, and her characters are utterly likeable and lifelike. It's clear she has improved so much from her debut to her second, and that only makes me more excited to see what she does for book #3, which I will definitely be reading.

I'm 23 years old and still love these books. Even though the main character is in High School I feel like the situations and feelings they are dealing with are still very real in my own life. The plot line of the book is very interesting and always keeps you guessing. The writing is brilliant and I love her first book 'Meant to Be' I cannot wait to read more.

I'm a 56 year old retired school teacher and a romantic at heart. I cannot seem to kick the habit of searching out teen novels to find those that I think students would enjoy reading. Well, Being Sloane Jacobs is one of those novels. It has teen friendship, realistic teen family issues, teen challenges, sports, teen romance, and a happy, feel - good ending. It touched me almost right away, and I couldn't stop reading until I finished the entire book. Great read!! Great job Lauren Morrill.

This was a fun YA novel. It's been awhile since I read it but this switching places novel did not disappoint.Rating: PG to PG-13

This book goes from sweet to awesome, there are so many emotions and this is all a relatable book. I think you are going to like it,all you have to do is try.

Being Sloane Jacobs is a well-written story about two young women with their own demons who want to escape their lives so when the opportunity presents itself, they jump on it. I loved this story from the beginning to the end.

It was a pretty fast read. I enjoyed the characters and how they all interacted. I'm not sure how believable it was but it was still really good.

BEING SLOANE JACOBS is my first novel by Morrill and I have to admit I loved it. I know many of my friends praised her first novel, MEANT TO BE, so I may have to check it out soon because of how much I enjoyed this book. This novel starts off allowing us to get to know the back-story of both of the Sloane Jacobs. They both have lost their skating mojo in their respective sports and are sent to skate camps in Montreal for different reasons. There they legitimately run into each other and hatch a plan straight out of the Parent Trap. No, they're not related, but they both know how to skate and they happen to look alike. Plus, the same name makes it easy, no? Sloane Devon gives up her hockey skates to switch with the figure-skating Sloane Emily and the hilariousness ensues. I have to say that it was beautiful to watch both girls grow through their newly respective sports. The scenes that took place on the ice were wonderfully descriptive and I often found myself re-reading them because of this. Seeing Sloane Emily hip-check a bully twice her size while Sloane Devon learned how to put trust in a partner while being yelled at by her Russia coach, Katinka, exemplified amazing character growth. This was something that Morrill did beautifully. Morrill's side characters were amazing as well. When it came to Sloane Devon's time at figure-skating camp, I often found myself looking forward to scenes with Andy--a sassy figure skater who never ceased to put a smile on my face. Such strong characterization, however, is not evident in characters like Ivy who are entirely one-dimensional and your typical textbook bully. For the most part, all characters managed to wow me with their depth, though.I also really enjoyed the slight romance found in both girl's lives. By no means was the romance a dominating plot point, but they provided very nice sub-plots. Both of the guys in the girls lives differentiated greatly, but they were genuine. The romance was slow-moving and believable and all around happy-making. Who could ask for a better type of connection? The extremely personal aspects of both girls lives were amazing as well. I don't want to get into the details because they are yours to discover, but they are both escaping some really troubling times at home. When all of this comes to a climax at the very end of the novel, you can't help but flip the pages lightning fast. The ending was beyond perfect. I wouldn't have asked for it to be any different, except I could live with it never-ending because I loved these girls so much. They were not only hilarious, but very easy to connect to.A small frustration with this novel was the fact that it was slightly dated. At one point, Sloane Emily points out that Sloane Devon's hockey bag smells so bad it must not have been cleaned since Justin Timberlake was putting out albums. First of all, I highly doubt that. Secondly, Justin Timberlake has now released a really successful album so your argument is invalid, Sloane. There was also a mention of the Bieber haircut when it was in style, which was quite a while ago. Pop culture references like this often had me shaking my head. I don't think such mentions should be in books unless they are still up to date. Just a personal pet peeve brought to light, here.I highly recommend checking this book out! It's super adorable and full of laughs. In fact, I laughed so hard that a second glass of water was necessary while reading. Morrill can definitely bring a smile to your face. With that said, the entire novel was entirely implausible. Girls just don't change their entire athletics knowledge in a mere four weeks. But, if you can get past that, this novel takes you on a hilarious journey sprinkled with love, self-growth, learning to trust, and a barrel of laughs. It's perfect for absolutely anyone looking for a book to put a smile on their face and is also a great way to ring in the New Year!

This textbook attempts to go beyond simply lecturing about how to do something and take the extra step of drawing in the reader and having them actually follow along. What's more, for the most part, it accomplishes this readily. The language is simple and easy to understand, and reads like a good professor talking to you and explaining it rather than the technical manual, dry and dreary, that many texts seem to come off as. The notion of packaging a software development package with a textbook is an intriguing one, and the inclusion of various per-fabricated scenarios, which are developed as the reader goes along and with the reader imput, does a great job of “teaching by doing”. It tells you what and how to do it, then lets you try. This is an excellent way to learn, as when you encounter an error, such as an infinite loop or a missing file, you can compare your code with that of the book, and find the one little spot you went wrong. This is vastly superior to spending hours pouring over your code only to realize you forgot a tiny “i++” somewhere along the line. The side-by-side image of the book's and your code is invaluable. The software development package itself, Greenfoot, is likewise a blessing. Having programmed in C++ before Java using a variety of coding interfaces, I have to say that Greenfoot blows anything else I've seen out of the water; its compiler errors are clear and easy to troubleshoot, and it has all the usual bells and whistles of most coding interfaces. (Auto-layouts, color-coded blocks of text to keep track of parentheses and brackets, et cetera.) In fact, my only complaint would be that the included libraries almost babysit the user, though after the unforgiving Microsoft Visual C++, I'm disinclined to make that a legitimate complaint. All things told, this book, and the corresponding software, strike me as an excellent way to adapt a textbook to multiple learning styles; the inclusion of numerous pictures and charts is bound to appeal to visual learners, the text is accessible for reading/writing learners, and the following along on your own program is great for kinesisthetic learners. If there's an audiobook version of this, I do believe that this textbook will have covered all the learning styles I know of, and covered them well. I highly recommend this book if you're just getting started learning Java.

I discovered this little gem as one of Amazon's "other user's bought" suggestions when browsing through books on Scratch, Alice, and the Lego Mindstorms systems. There is a growing body of published work specifically written towards educators, particularly those focusing on teenagers, and this book is a great addition to anyone interested in the subject.Introduction to Greenfoot programming is an excellent hands-on tutorial of the Greenfoot system, a Java-based programming environment particularly well-suited to teaching object-oriented programming concepts to teenagers with its focus on gaming and simulation exercises. Having tought my own pre-teen nephew some of these concepts in simpler systems such as Scratch, and visual systems like Alice (while, written in Java requires no knowledge of that language), I find this book to be a great guide for teachers and students alike. The book is not really focused on teaching Java so much as introducing object-oriented concepts through its color illustrated examples and exercises.A warning: the book introduces a lot of terminology in a way that some teenagers may find difficult to understand. Also, if you have no familiarity at all with programming, this book may be a little challenging. Some of the examples are completely developed but the book leaves it as a challenge to the reader to complete many of the projects. Fortunately the source code is available online to assist any enterprising young programmer.Overall, I think this book is a great companion for a classroom that is lead by an adult who is thoroughly familiar with Java and other aspects of object-oriented programming. A really motivated student may be able to figure out the more advanced examples on their own, but many students will be well-served to have an experienced guide along to help give further explanation to the concepts provided.I highly recommend this book, the programming system it describes, and the efforts of the University of Kent to bring this free educational system to the world.

First off, let me introduce the Greenfoot IDE for those who may not be familiar with it-- Greenfoot is a Java IDE optimized for game/simulation development. It allows you to construct and test Worlds and the individual "actor" objects within them visually so you will know exactly how you want everything to behave at runtime, and what changes must be made programmatically to make it so. Greenfoot is meant to be a learning environment for programmers relatively new to Java, but its game-optimized API and visual testing make it a great IDE for any level programmer looking to make a game in Java. There have even been [rudimentary] 3D games made. Anyway, now on to the book-- it is everything you would expect it to be and a little bit more; it provides good coverage of the Greenfoot API, it teaches the reader introductory Java as he/she works through the projects, and it provides plenty of links to more information about Greenfoot or Java development in general. My only complaint is that it is a bit short, but that is really only because it centers on Greenfoot and game/simulation-related topics in Java. There are some 'project ideas' towards the end of the book that I wish Kolling had fleshed out a bit, but there is plenty of online documentation on the Greenfoot site to fill in whatever gaps the book leaves. There's still plenty there, and what is there is gold. BlueJ is another Java 'learning IDE' that Kolling was a part of, and the book for that covers much more broad-spectrum Java. If you like Greenfoot and plan to branch out with your Java studies, I would recommend BlueJ and the book "Objects First with BlueJ" as a complementary text.

I have used this book to teach Java to neophytes. The approach to doing so is superb. This is the best, most comfortable Java teaching book I have ever used, second barely being Objects First with Java by the same author.

Empire of the Imagination is a decent, but short, Biography of Gary's Gygax's life. It has a few shortcomings, but ultimately is a satisfactory work.Just some quick background on myself before I get into the review--I was a friend of Gary in his later years. You can find my name or initials on much of the work in the latter half of the bibliography, mostly in the days when he was doing stuff with publishers Clark and Cheunault (and Mongoose). I'm still friendly with Gail. I wanted to make sure I'm upfront about this before doing a review, because obviously I have my own biases, but I also want to make sure I'm not dismissed as a "random guy on the Internet" either. The book itself is presented in a series of vignettes--a notable point in Gary's life with some dialog and then reflections on how he got to that point. The book does a decent job of giving an overview of how things were going in Gary's life at each point. It's clear the author has taken a lot of time and tried to compile a lot of different sources into a narrative. The stories are told in an entertaining style, and I enjoyed some of the new insights into Gary's earlier life, like reading about the "Big Fish Story", or why Gary stopped driving.Based on reading this book, it's fairly accurate, and doesn't conflict with a lot of both what I've read and the private stories Gary told me, so I think he does a decent job of getting his history right. And a lot of these stories are backed up by the public record as well. I trust that Witwer did a very good job on this. The main thing I like is that Witwer does a great job of producing footnotes for the book and bibliographies. There's footnotes for each chapter. He draws upon a lot of public statements made by Gary, including his long running threads at ENWorld. The Appendixes also give a rather comprehensive bibliography of Gary's gaming work, and there's another with a dated timeline of important events of Gary's life. The very last chapters Witwer spends discussing Gary's influence on modern fiction and how gaming had changed the world, influenced popular culture, etc. I was very prepared to be disappointed since some biographies don't go into this amount of detail. There are, however, some flaws. In some cases, using the narrative device leads to some creative interpretations of the facts. There are some things I don't think he would have ever said. (I cringed when I read "What Would Conan Do?", as well as the "grim reaper" figure asking Gary to play chess on his deathbed). My personal preference would have been less "creative interpretation" and more analysis, especially where the creative process occurred. Also, he frames sections with Gary as a player in a Dungeon, and calls these section "Levels", something that I think just makes the biography less serious and a bit too "cute" for my tastes. But that's a minor criticism based on personal taste. The book unfortunately is short...at 300 pages, to me, the book sacrifices depth for breadth. I'm not sure if Witwer was under any sort of limitation in terms of scope, but because of the quickness it feels like we are just getting highlights. There's no real attempt to try to delve deeper into Gary's personality, or to analyze his creative phases. The direct interview sources that the author has interviewed directly are surprisingly limited. Witwer interviews a few key figures but ignores a few others. One notable absence is Gail Gygax--considering that she was became closest person in his life (one could argue his True Love), this absence seems jarring, especially when we get to areas around the divorce and especially the post-TSR days. Although to be fair in that respect, Gail has not been very willing to be interviewed, and I don't know if Witwer attempted to reach out to her but was rebuffed, or just didn't attempt to contact her. Regardless of who is at fault, this hurts the biography, especially since a lot of his primary emphasis is on what family members have written. He also doesn't talk to many creative collaborators, out of the existing list, Mentzer's the only one who'd be considered one. The absence of interviews with folks like Rob Kuntz, Flint Dille, Dave Newton, Jon Creffield, and Jeff Talenian are all felt. Additionally, it's surprising that the author didn't try to get alternative perspectives from those who might have been critical or opposed to Gary, say for instance, somebody from the Arneson or Blume camps, or people who worked at TSR and were critical of Gary, just to make sure all perspectives were covered. I think that's the type of research you really need to do for a comprehensive Biography. There are also a few curious choices--why did Witwer choose Elmore and Easley in his limited pool of interviewees, considering they were more part of the art department than the gaming departments, over other folks?Another troubling thing is that the author has referenced a few things that I know Gary has denied over the years, even in private, without attributing the source. For instance, he mentioned Gary's rumored cocaine usage, but I've never seen Gary acknowledged that publicly, and I once asked him privately if he ever used that drug (he admitted to using "benzies and dexies", and a one time use of LSD--which he called "Lousy, Stupid Drug", but denied using cocaine). I'm not saying this didn't happen, but in this particular case, there's no real quote or footnote to confirm this and more importantly, who said he was using drugs. This bugs me because the accusation of that was the one time I saw Gary actually threaten legal action against somebody for suggesting that he used cocaine, and it would be nice if the book had attributed a direct quote from somebody on this subject.I will say that Witwer is willing to expand and elaborate on stuff. A blogger's review of the rough cut (actually the same review on Amazon Joseph Bloch posted here) made it sound like everything after TSR was reduced to a few paragraphs, but it looks like in this initial cut there were a few extra chapters. Also, after discussing it with Jon Creffield, Witwer did seem to approach him after I encouraged Jon to write to him. I do hope he considers an expanded edition and interviews a lot more people and can add depth to the book.As it stands, because of these omissions and flaws, I can give the book no more than 3 stars, but it deserves 3 stars because where it succeeds, it succeeds well. To use a gaming analogy, it's like the "Bell Curve" in the original DMG--he comes up as the average center. I can only hope the next printing or a follow-up comes up more to the right of the bell curve. Given that he's a new author, I think it's a decent work, and I hope second or third printings have the opportunity to expand on what's been covered here.Amazon specific information: I purchased this on the Kindle format, and it was on my Kindle right when I woke up today. The Kindle format has a flaw in the index, for some reason on the Kindle Fire HD the index doesn't appear to fit the page, the beginning of each index entry is cropped--hopefully this can be repaired and updated. Beyond that, there's no other flaws that I have found with the e-book format

A couple of years ago I read the book Of Dice and Men, a look back at the early days of Dungeons & Dragons, and, those of us nerds who played it. I was an avid player of the game back in the mid to late 70s, and have continued a fascination with the world(s) created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, the original duo behind the game. I’ve gone on to play computer based games, both early ones that were limited to being installed on your computer and played by one or a couple of people, and on, to MMORPGs, the massive universes created online like Everquest and Worlds of Warcraft. The earlier book I mentioned was mostly focused on the game itself, and the gamers who took it and ran with it. There was plenty of biographical information about the creators, but you couldn’t call it biography. Michael Witwer’s Empire of Imagination takes another run at it. As he says in the introduction, he couldn’t believe when he started researching the book that no one had ever written a biography of Gary Gygax, who, while not a household name except to those of us in the gaming world, created something that went on to be the foundation for things we take for granted in modern day life, everything from the use of computers for games, to the advent of social media. As he also points out, it’s telling, that in an episode of the pop-culture show Futurama, Gygax’s character is paired up with Lieutenant Uhura, Al Gore, and Steven Hawking – taking on the universe. The book is well written, completely engaging, and for anyone with an interest in the topic, a must read.

Just the very fact that this book exists is a wonderful thing. I feel so fortunate, to have had a chance to communicate with Gary while he was still with us. It was via email, and I was astounded when I fired off an email to his alleged email address, and it turned out to not only be valid, but the man himself answered me. We shot a few emails back and forth and I was just left in awe of the guy who was already elevated to demigod status in my life, having been an avid player of the game, but moreover, an avid reader of fantasy fiction, then just plain old, lifelong avid reader. It was all his fault. He is the reason I even know what the word demigod means. :) The guy who influenced the guys who re created human existence. Take one look at Bill Gates and you know damn well he has read the DM's guide. :)

This book covers the life of young Gary Gygax quite well. It gave me some excellent insights into the person who would one day create Dungeons, and Dragons. The author does seem to want to skip past the unflattering parts of Gary Gygax's life during adulthood however, and the gaps are noticeable. I was left wondering about Gygax's difficulties as a parent and husband and how that affected people who knew him from both work and privately. The author seems to find Gary's perspective in Gygax's youth and to a lesser extent towards the end of Gary's life, but seems to loose it during Gygax's middle years. The loss made the book feel a little incomplete to me.
