Men and women will forever constitute mystery to one another. Though there are ways in which men are superior (such as in physical prowess), there are ways in which women are superior (such as in hearing and fine finger dexterity). Any such differences do not constitute one superior and the other inferior. Men and women are complementary to one another, that is to say that together they are complete and separated they are incomplete. Rest assured that in the eyes of God men and women are equally the "sons" of God. For long ages women have been treated as chattels, as mere property. Though many modern civilized nations have come a long way to giving men and women equal freedoms and rights, far too many cultures are still abusive to women. This book is a good read and a good beginning study of the topic. The arguments are well thought out and well presented. I highly recommend this book to any thoughtful reader; you may enhance your insight, add to your wisdom, and sharpen your vision of a better and brighter future -- both individually and socially.

Everyone should read this concise text by a male nineteenth-century philosopher, written at a time when legal oppressions of women had actually become far worse than in medieval times, to argue for legal equality of men and women. It is a masterpiece of writing, and the logic is irrefutable. Women in particular should read it to understand exactly how horrible was the status of most women only several generations ago.

A powerful articulation of why we should all want equality for all people. Still highly relevant. Some of it may seem somewhat dated but only because we live in western society. I am mainly referring to his arguments that women should be allowed to own their own property and have legal equality and such. This is still a relevant point for women in many countries though. He refutes many objections to the equal treatment of women many of which I still hear or read today. Like that women aren't suited to many occupations either because of their physical or mental natures. I won't restate those arguments here but they are beautifully, passionately laid out and it is well worth the read. I have only read On Liberty and it is good but this was deeply moving and it is hard to imagine that he has written anything better than this.

Not necessarily a MUST, but Mill is one of those philosophers on the standard to read list and his beginning argument about feeling versus reason is applicable even in today's civil rights struggles. For those looking for a intro to Mill, it's a good start.

Written more a century ago by one of England's great thinkers and writers. But it is no surprise that such a great man would produce such a work, after all, his father was one of the founders of the University of London, the first university to enroll women. It was a university that founded a women's medical school more than 150 years ago.

Daring to predict the future, a couple of weeks before the American presidential election, there is a very high probability that the “piggish” opinions and treatment of women by one man will be the dispositive factor in electing America’s first female president.John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher and independent thinker who was born in 1806 and died in Avignon, France in 1873. I recently read and reviewed On Liberty (Dover Thrift Editions), liked it, and decided this topical work would be next. Mill was the first Member of Parliament to call for women’s suffrage. Eight decades before Simone de Beauvoir published her classic work The Second Sex on woman’s subordinate position in society, Mill published this one. Mill had a long-term collaborative relationship with Harriet Taylor, whom he would eventually marry after her husband died. Mill seems to have “practiced what he preached” and felt their marriage and work was one of equality. He credits her for both inspiration as well as actual writing of this work. Specifically, he says: “Who can tell how many of the most original thoughts put forth by male writers, belong to a woman by suggestion, to themselves only by verifying and working out? If I may judge by my own case, a very large proportion indeed.” (Of course, he did not actually credit her as the co-author!)The work commences like a legal brief, and much of his tone and argument are in the best traditions of tight rationale discourse. In the first paragraph he says: “… the legal subordination of one sex to the other – is wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other.” Mill observes the duality of the claims, for example, in America, that “all men are created equal” but maintained the institution and practice of slavery. So too with the ancient Greeks, who considered themselves “free,” but utilized slaves. As Mill states, with women, “from the very earliest twilight of human society, every woman…was found in a state of bondage to some man.” In all these cases, much intellectual effort was expended justifying these arrangements as the “natural order of things.”A room of one’s own? Mill recognized the need for a woman to have independence and a bit of her own space, and finances independent of a man were essential when he said: “The power of earning is essential to the dignity of a woman, if she has not independent property.” Only in the last 20-30 years have women become accepted in traditional “male dominated fields”, from telephone lineman to CEO. In this work Mill proclaimed that “No occupation should be off-limits” and that women can beat men in many fields of endeavor and he questions if there are any innate mental differences at all, without those imposed by acculturalization. And he concedes they are often more incisive in their observations, particularly social: “With equality of experience and of general faculties, a woman usually sees much more than a man of what is immediately before her.”Mill was enthralled with Madame de Stael, the “greatest enemy of Napoleon: “… there is not in all modern literature a more eloquent vehicle of thought than the style of Madame de Stael.” As a result of Mill’s recommendation, I finally read my first work of hers Geneviève de Brabant (French Edition).A wise, ethical, and thoughtful man, far ahead of his times. 5-stars.[Note: Posted on November 18 - like a lot of people, I made a bad prediction.]

I was 55 when I finally read this. It is one of those must-read books. I have underlined so much of it now, and will keep it on my favorites shelf. How someone who lived so long ago could have written something so applicable even today is astounding to me. I hope John Stuart Mill went to heaven for writing this!

Highly recommended if you like this author. Really enjoyed learning his view on this subject, different from what I already read from him.

On the positive side, this book is a superb presentation of Romantic philosophy and its elusive corollary the "creative imagination" especially as propounded by Samuel Coleridge. On the negative side, the author does not engage the fundamental deficiencies of Romantic philosophy that led to its demise two centuries ago. Romanticism could not deliver on its promise of a spiritual realm beyond the material universe we observe. The Romantics, like the Modernists before them, came to despair of objective truth and ultimate meaning in life. The scientists' response was to diminish man to a collection of atoms while the Romantics sought to ennoble and even deify him.Where Modernism made the scientist's reason the ultimate arbiter of Truth, Romanticism vested that function in the poet's imagination. For the poet, the phenomena of the natural world form a symbolic language that, when properly interpreted by the creative imagination, reveals hidden truths about man's inner nature and the mind of God itself. (107.) The poetic imagination is "truth-bearing" and gives us "our only possible apprehension of the Kingdom of God." (13-14.)The poet's access to the spiritual realm is through the imagination. The poet observes the natural world and, with the power of creative imagination, transforms an image from nature into a metaphor for an unseen spirit realm. In Romanticism, there is no objective spiritual reality that can be directly perceived or experienced. All we can do is hope that there is a spiritual reality based upon the poet’s ability to create metaphors about it. That is Romanticism's "wager on transcendence."But the author lets the cat out of the bag when he states that the wager on transcendence "is in fact a wager on God’s immanence." (61.) In other words, Romanticism seeks to transform the transcendent God who is other than ourselves into a wholly immanent God, which is man himself, or at least some men, i.e., the poets. Once you turn man into the immanent God among us, you no longer need a transcendent God. That is essentially the teaching of Anthroposophy and, not surprisingly, the author lauds the anthroposophist Owen Barfield as a "great thinker" and frequently cites him as an authority on the transfiguration of man.For Barfield, the history of the universe is the story of Absolute Mind becoming conscious of itself through man. We are now on the cusp of man's ultimate evolutionary destiny as he becomes consciously aware of the wholly immanent God within his sub-conscious mind. Though man becomes the creator of all meaning, not all men are creatively equal. We must look to the poets, like Coleridge, who open pathways to their sub-conscious minds and draw out the wisdom of the ages which they swathe in magic combinations of words that reveal hidden truths to those with ears to hear and eyes to see. See, R. J. Reilly's Romantic Religion: A Study of Barfield, Lewis, Williams, and Tolkien, which the author here describes as an excellent book.Reilly extolled Barfield's Anthroposophism and considered fellow Inklings Tolkien, Lewis and Williams too timid in their Christian belief in a God who is both immanent and transcendent. Reilly whole-heartedly endorsed Barfield's "radical immanence" which "frightens most of us: we do not want to be God." (Romantic Religion at 225.) But the daring poets rush in where even angels fear to tread.Coleridge described the creative power within as "a repetition in the finite mind of the eternal act of creation in the infinite I AM" and poet-philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder, presaging Reilly, wrote, "The artist is become a creator God." If the world was to be re-enchanted with meaning and "apparelled in celestial light," the almighty poets must first create then place it there. As Coleridge penned, "Ah! From the soul itself must issue forth; A light, a glory, a fair luminous cloud; Enveloping the Earth--"Man is God, the autonomous Creator of life's meaning. That was Romanticism's ultimate wager, but it lost that bet centuries ago. The author, who fancies himself among the poets and relishes their exalted position as the sole creators and tellers of Truth, overlooks Romanticism's fatal flaws and offers nothing in this book to warrant its revival.

This book is beautiful. This book is brilliant. Before I read this book, I did not know that I was stuck in a valley, able to see only my own little piece of time and space, thoroughly isolated by the ideas of my own time and unable to see how these ideas were a product of all the history of writing and thinking that have gone before me.Malcolm Guite--priest, poet, scholar, and musician--beckoned me on a journey by explaining in the introduction the post-enlightenment split between rational and imaginative thought, which put the humanities at risk of seeming silly and obsolete. I'm one of many pilgrims to walk this planet who've found the humanities to be vital and life-giving, but I've never known how to defend my love for them against the rational rows of numbers and facts that are given so much credit today. And, of course, Guite uses poetry as the foundation of his thesis, focusing on a poem by Heaney which marvels at the rain stick and how a pipe of dried seeds can produce the sounds of lush water. This seeming paradox is referenced at every stage of the journey through Faith, Hope and Poetry.Fortunately for me, Guite is an excellent tour guide out of my own shadowed valley and on to the mountain top where I can now see the lay of the land that surrounds me. Guite uses each chapter to heal the rift between reason and imagination by showing imaginative powers to be not just equal to but perhaps even superior to dead, inanimate, and shallow materialist explanations for the world. Each chapter catalogs the depths of beauty and meaning of poetry's most popular and enduring symbols (such as light and water) as Guite ushers in historical poets to express his gently unfolding thesis. By the end, he has skillfully unwound centuries of poetry chronologically while simultaneously weaving together the many complex ways different poets have used the same symbols across time and space. All of this serves to prove his thesis that imaginative powers are indeed necessary to understand the world. By the time I reached the mountaintop, I could see exactly what he saw and I agreed with every word. This book is thorough and self-contained, and yet its ideas reach out to every poem everywhere. I'm at a loss to express how deeply this book moved me and how completely it transformed the way I think. Guite has given me confidence in the absolute necessity of poetry to hold together the seemingly disparate and to reveal the seemingly unknowable. It isn't until the last page of the book that Guite finally comes out and says it: "A study of poetic imagination turns out to be a form of theology." I will read this book again. The question is how long I'll be able to wait to do it.

Well written, thank you Malcolm. A excellent explanation of thr Raistick, clarified the authors purpose.

I have worked through this amazing book, chapter by chapter, and have found stunning insights on virtually every page. Guite, both a theologian, literary scholar, and poet of great skill, takes us on a tour from the Middle Ages and the Dream of the Rood all the way to our contemporary, Seamus Heaney, with probing chapters on Shakespeare, Coleridge, and several others along the way.The hypothetical general reader interested in ways faith and art can connect and mutually illuminate each other will find this a rich source. Both theologians and literary scholars could build courses around it; it's perfect for "theology and literature" or "religion and literature" courses. Guite has an amazing grasp of classical theology, the (British) literary tradition, and contemporary culture (the last named being the unspoken backdrop for the other two). Those familiar with him may know him as a college chaplain at Cambridge, the leader of a rock group, a dynamic speaker on the Inklings and poets like Blake and Coleridge, and a fan of American motorcyles. Few bring such varied resources/talents to the table. They vivify the contents of this remarkable book.

To my mind, Sir Henry Yule is Marco's redeemer. His translation and epic compilation is still the 'Go To' book on Marco Polo. So much so, that my colleague and I relied on it daily, we slept with it ,it never left our side, and we called it our 'Bible', during our retracing of Marco Polo legendary 25.000 Silk Road journey for the first and still only time in history. Yule was a Scottish Orientalist educated at both the University of Edinburgh and the College of London. He published and edited many travel books, “The Travels of Marco Polo”, being the most important. Henry was commissioned in the British army and served in India. This began his fascination with the people and the region. Upon retirement he devoted his leisure time to medieval history and geography of Central Asia. From his library he would research and send out inquiries throughout the world, to statesmen, foreign diplomats, early explorers, and soldiers in the field, anyone who might have a grain of knowledge or new information. Many areas in China, especially the desert regions, were being traversed for the first time by western scholars and adventurers, since Polo himself. He investigated each and every word and sentence of Polo's account. After sifting through this huge jigsaw puzzle, he carefully notated every entry in his translation, along with the various options. A monumental undertaking, made by this amazing hero of the Marco Polo story.Francis O'Donnell - Author of "In the Footsteps of Marco Polo" the companion book to the PBS Emmy nominated documentary.

The Travels of Marco Polo contains the original account, from the fourrteenth century, of a Venetian merchant's experience in the Far East of that day. For a twenty-first-century reader to make head or tail of the account, a set of explanations, at the very least of the geography, would be essential; such supplementary material is, however, not provided in this account. The reader thus is lost, in more ways than one, as soon as the account leaves the Mediterranean Sea for points east.I felt frustrated by the use of the word "complete" to describe a printing of the text of the account without any notes identifying where these places were, let alone whether any other accounts confirmed or conflicted with the given text.

includes stunning annotated research

Not a good book for the casual reader. Cannot go 2 sentences without footnotes....very annoying if you just wanted to read MP describe his travels.

Marco Polo appertains to an exeptionally small group of historical personalities widely known on all continents. Such knowledge in the first place is based on the passing from generation to generation tales of adventurers and marvellous riches of the Asian World in the Middle Ages. To evaluate in this way of Marco Polo's book is the result of a renaissance interpretation of above all a rational text. No matter how interesting, such an image has made that text to reader of all ages over the past seven centuries, it has concealed its values: understanding of the reality and connection of numerous people and their cultures present on the extended Euro-Asian area. Colonel Henry Yule, himself a great admirer of these infinite diversities; such as geographical, climatic, ethnic, cultural and what else not, has unselfishly made available his great experience of a scientist and researcher, talent and good will in verifiying the saying of Marco Polo and presented it to the scientists and public. The summary of this extremely complex, professional and meticulous work is laid out on these 1680 pages (vols. 1 & 2). Numerous illustrations and detailed descriptions of itineraries and places from the Mediterranean to the Pacific and India, an area of abundant testimonies of great cultures; where great armies have roamed; obstinate missionaries and merchants, diplomats and spies have operated and what we called The Silk Roads, introduce the reader into the great world of Marco Polo and are a valuable source of information for everyone who intends to see these wordless testimonies and numerous fascinating landscapes of vast deserts and their oasis, mountain ranges and green valleys, where life runs slowly but with dignity as Marco Polo has seen and described it. Marco Polo and his work have been in the focus of many individual researchers and teams before and after Mr. Henry Yule, giving valuable contributions. However, for the overall knowledge, vision and comprehension of Marco Polo and his achivements, the book written by colonel Henry Yule "The Book of Marco Polo" has maintained the very top position won by its first presentation to the public in the distant year of 1871.

this is a wonderful read full of interesting facts. I highly recommend this version of the travels of Marco Polo over others.
