a bit long winded at times

For those who enjoy historical non-fiction combined with adventure, hardship and redemption (eventually), this is a great read. The story follows the life & times of James Porter, a Londoner transported to Australia as a convict in the early 1800's. Although he undoubtedly committed crimes, the fact he loved the theater, was an accomplished singer and came from terrible family circumstances in the first place, creates a forgivable character. The story itself is incredible. Surviving many years in the penal colony (today's Tasmania) - and many unsuccessful escape attempts, he eventually manages to steal a ship that he and a band of 9 other convicts sail east across some of the wildest oceans in the world to reach Chile. This was an incredible survival story in itself, however the next part based in Chile, for me is at least as compelling.I like the way the story (and fate) of James Porter kept unfolding right until the end.

After reading this book I realised how little I knew about the individual characters that formed the fabric of Australia's penal colony. At school you learn the basics but this tale made the times come alive, especially with its detailed descriptions of the conditions. James Porter was transported to Australia as a convict in the 1800s. While the conditions he lived in were horrendous, he never gave up trying to escape, no matter what the punishment he endured when caught. The fact that he and a band of other prisoners decided to steal a boat and sail to Chile is incredible - as is their journey and the events that awaited them. Porter's resilience and defiance shines through and certainly made me want to find out more about the times.

Some books just blow you away. Laurie Halse Anderson did that in her trilogy beginning with Chains. A National Book Award finalist this book deserves all its awards. In a time like today when we face the possible repression of our people, it behooves us to examine history. So many of us believe our founding fathers were good people. We believe what they said and did was sacrosanct. We've honor them and set them up as near dieties. But, in reality they were people. Full of flaws, just like us. Had they lost the Revolutionary War, they would have been shunned and called traitors. Having won, we herald them as heroes. In Chains we examine what it might have been like during that turbulent, uncertain time to have been a slave. The main character, Isabel, is a Negro child, trying to protect her younger sister. Alone, enslaved, abused, she struggles to achieve her rightful freedoms. The author did an amazing job of telling Isabel's story without overdramatizing the hardships. Made it easier for me to read. The times are tempestuous at best. Finding herself in New York City at the time of the British invasion, Isabel sways from the rebel side to the British side. Her goal is not a country's freedom, which she recognizes as not pertaining to her, but the freedom of herself and her sister. She'll risk her life to achieve that goal. Each chapter begins with a clip from a primary source, a newspaper article, a letter from a patriot or a British soldier, an excerpt from our historical documents. Those headings ground the chapter in history. The author strives to tell Isabel's story as accurately as she can all these years later.Book 2 and 3 are finished. Thank goodness for those of us just finding this trilogy. Because when you finish Chains, you'll not want to wait to keep reading. Here are some examples of the beautiful writing:...Being loyal to the one who owned me gave me prickly thoughts, like burrs trapped in my shift, pressing into my skin with every step....There was truth in his words, hard truth, a hammer sticking a stone..."Gossip is the foul smell of the Devil's backside," that's what Momma always said....Her voice sounded raw, like it had been run against a grater. The absolute essence of this first book is written in these words from Isabel's mouth: I was chained between two nations.Enjoy this wonderful series. If it doesn't win the National Book Award, it certainly should have!!i

I forgot to write this review after my son was reading this book at school. I read it as well to see what my son was reading.I took a long break from fiction before picking this book up because books I read didn't draw me that much. I even started to question writers' abilities to write another great book after picking up some bad ones to read. The well has been emptied. That's what I thought. This is the first book I read by Laurie Halse Anderson and from then on, I started looking for her other works. I loved the voice of the main character. It drew me in right away. I couldn't put it down. Writing was flawest. And I almost never say that about most of the books I read. When writing flaws and the character speaks through, you immerse yourself to see the main character's journey with your heart leaping. The writer made me care and root for the protagonist. You can check out the first chapter before you buy the book. And if you enjoy it, you won't be disappointed. If someone really pushed me to the wall to pick a chapter from that book to remove, it would be the first chapter. With each page, you get another treat. The writer hid one important fact from the start to hit you on the face when it's revealed later on. I raised a question in the first chapter and thought the writer was careless to reveal it. I was wrong. A less accomplished writer would do just that, reveal that information in the first chapter. But not Laurie. She knew that waiting and revealing it later will shock you and it did just that. Many writers never let their fiction characters have small triumphs along the way. When the main protagonist had small victories, I wasn't bored but cheered on.What a wonderful way to weave history and three dimentional characters. Descriptions were sharp. Settings were well drawn out. And what a great history lesson at the same time. This book has been picked by my son's teacher. My son is ten. I questioned if this book is suitable for such a young age group when I was engrossed in details of tortures and mistreatments of slaves. But it would be unjustice to hide it from young kids who are learning about history. They need to see things in light. And history does repeat itself.(It might not be a good read for your son if he's reading comics or Diaries of a Whimpy Kid. My son didn't complain but wasn't eager as well to get started. When I questioned him to see how much he understands from it, I was nicely surprised how well he understood what was going on. So don't be afraid to give it to your kid. But don't be mad if your son prefers comics. Be patient.)

This is a GREAT book. Very moving and touching, sad and educational. I learned a lot while getting deeply attached to Isabel and Ruth. Written well, and an easy read, I finished very quickly, hard to put down! I think everybody should read this book, but those in particular that are studying or are interested in women's, African American, revolutionary, or slave history.

The central fact about contemporary sociology is that it has no core theory. This doesn't prevent applied sociologists from doing very good work based on what is called "middle level theory." But what one learns in graduate school is parade of sociological gurus, such as Pareto, Simmel, Weber, Durkheim, Parsons, Homans, Goffman, Garfinkle, Schutz, and so on. Moreover the culture of high level sociological theory is that one must uniquely individual, basing one's ideas as much as possible on one's own psyche, not the work of previous researchers. Doing high level sociological theory is thus like painting or writing fiction. This of course is but the cause and the effect of the absence of core sociological theory.Obviously, then, sociology is a science only from the middle level down, and it is to the credit of a younger generation of sociological theorists that they are trying to create at least a unified middle-level theory, which the authors of this handbook call "analytical sociology." There are two major points to make about this new school of thought (I will call it a "school" in that Hedström and Bearman argue eloquently in the "Foundations" part of the book that it has enough unity to define it as a cogent intellectual entity). First, the analytical foundations of neighboring fields, psychology, biology, economics, and political science have analytical cores that are deeply mathematical, and students learn to deal with the core even if they themselves favor applied work. In this Handbook there are virtually no equations, and certainly no analytical theory based on formal modeling. Second, the editors' exposition of core analytical sociology has no substantive principles at all, but merely methodological principles. The first fifty pages, outlining analytical sociology, are virtually exclusively methodological. Are these facts a problem? I believe they are. Methodology is for the philosophers, not for the scientists. And scientist should be able to formulate and understand, if not personally produce, analytical theory in the form of mathematical models. The problem, of course, is that most "analytical sociologists" reject the rational actor model in any form, and this is a big mistake. I should note that in 1995, Hedström and Swedeberg wrote a very insightful paper urging the adoption of the rational actor model by sociologists. This book is a big step back.Despite the failure of this Handbook to credibly establish "analytical sociology," there are many fine contributions by individual authors, Parts II and IV being especially useful. There is nice chapter on emotions by Jon Elster, an excellent chapter on beliefs by Jens Rydgren, and a decent job of explaining signaling models without equations by Diego Gambetta. Typical for sociologists who are afraid of being assimilated by economics and psychology, fine chapters on game theory and behavioral game theory are relegated to the back of the book.

See more of my reviews on The YA Kitten! So it’s become a thing where if a book I got a review copy of has been out for so long that it goes on sale for cheap, I buy it. Might be a print copy of the book in a bookstore, might be a Kindle book. It’s my apology for being such a failure of a reviewer, especially if the book is by and about marginalized people. The Bone Witch was one such case. The book left me underwhelmed, but I don’t regret buying it or reading it one little bit. I just wanted more from it.The worldbuilding and plot are the novel’s strongest points by far. Following Tea from the time her powers as a dead-raising bone witch awaken at her brother’s funeral to when she becomes a full-fledged asha, Chupeco’s fantasy world unfolds naturally as Tea herself learns about the surprisingly superficial asha system while a maid and then apprentice in House Valerian, one of many asha collectives in The Willows, a district of the city of Ankyo. More powerful asha will fight, sure, but a surprising amount of an asha’s time is spent as an entertainer at nobles’ parties as an entertainer. Upon becoming an asha, they have to pay their House back all the money that was spent on them.It sounds like a criticism of the novel, but the shallow superficiality of the system was actually one of the most interesting points of the worldbuilding. It’s such an obvious flaw that there’s simply no way it won’t come back up later. Since an older Tea is in exile and ready to raise some hell, perhaps she came to the same realizations. She’s fourteen when she’s an apprentice and seventeen as an exile, leaving a gap of three years where something drastically changed Tea.Most of the novel focuses on Tea’s time as a fourteen-year-old asha apprentice, the process of becoming an asha, and the very slowly unfolding mystery of who is causing chaos within the city. Though all of it is interesting as Tea’s world unfolds itself before our eyes, the actual pacing of The Bone Witch is glacial. Most of the novel’s forward momentum comes not from the above-listed events but from interlude-esque sections in which an older, exiled Tea is telling her story to an unnamed bard. She slowly reveals her plans for war to him and (not unsurprisingly) freaks him out.Though I don’t know the proper name for it, this literary device is so irritating. Another example: when you read the action-packed prologue to a 400-page book only for the novel to meander along uninterestingly until that action finally kicks in around page 390. It’s a teasing attempt to up the pacing of any slow-moving novel and it rarely works. Here, it’s just annoying. It’s clear something happened to change Tea after the end of her apprenticeship, but the novel doesn’t feature that event. We only get mentions of that big something and implications about it.That massive gap between who she was in the past and who she was now, leaving readers with questions about what in the world happened, is simply too much for me. A guessing game is not what I wanted from this book. Though its sequel The Heart Forger is out now, I don’t have much interest in picking it up since its jacket copy implies it’s picking up and sticking with where the older Tea’s story left off. It’s worth reading for the brilliance of the worldbuilding, but The Bone Witch is ultimately a mixed bag.

I love love love this book, and have nothing but great things to say about it. I was worried by the initial number of poor reviews, but I was not disappointed. Chupeco did an amazing job creating a unique fantasy world I longed to know more about.Tea, a young girl of 12, accidentally raises her brother from the dead at his funeral. In this abrupt way she learns that she is a bone witch, a rare form of asha. She must learn to control her magic so it does not destroy her and goes away to school for training. The description does not do this book justice. I was enraptured in this world, learning about the countries and the politics in place, the creatures that live there, and the different roles in their society. This first book goes through Tea's training to become an asha, starting at age 12 through about 15. Woven into the story, however, are snippets from the present where Tea is now 17, in completely different circumstances, and has become quite the bad ass.I understand why some people could find this book a bit slow. There is not a ton of action going on until a lot closer to the end, but I don't think that means that it's lacking. The purpose hear was all about Tea's growth as a character as she grows up, where she started and how she got closer to where she is in the present, and the in depth world building that is necessary. It feels just like I would expect a first book in a series to feel when it starts out narrating a character's beginnings. There may not be much fighting or action, but that didn't make Tea's journey to be an asha feel any less important.By the end, I was thoroughly invested in the character and excited for action packed journey that's clearly coming in the future. The ending finished on a satisfying note while still leaving me pumped and longing for the second book to come. All on its own, this book isn't exactly awe inspiring, but as a beginning to a series it is amazing. I was enormously pleased by the end of the book and cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel.RatingI would rate this book a 4.5 out of 5. I loved the world and the journey this book created in it's own right, and it was made only that much better by the great things it promises to come. 4 for the great read on it's own, with a potential to reach a 5 if the sequel holds up to its promise.

So the beautiful cover drew me to this book initially. This was a hard book to get through for me since the story seemed to go so slow due to all the world and character building. Set in a world filled with magic, Tea is born into a family that has more magical abilities than most. Her sisters use their magic to help their community by healing the sick and the heartbroken. But when Tea's favorite brother dies, she accidentally raises him from the dead, revealing that she is a rare, powerful and often feared bone witch. Her magic is dark and she has the power to raise the dead. Taken from her community to protect her and mentor her, wiser and older ashas try to teach her everything she needs to know to control her magic for the safety of others and to battle the dark forces that bombard her world. Told in alternating past and future points of view by Tea, you see the beginning of Tea's training and the banished asha she becomes, hungry for revenge for all she lost. The question of how Tea's best intentions to save her world and her mentor leads to her banishment draws you into this book and leaves you wanting the next book in the series to come out soon.I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.I received an advanced readers copy of this book from NetGalley for review consideration.
