In children’s fairy tales, the wicked characters die and children rejoice; Jack’s Giant is felled; Dorothy’s wicked witch is dead and we sing; . Red Riding Hood’s wolf is axed. There aren’t many stories for children where good people die. But Tom Crice’s Birds of a Feather confronts the death of a man beloved by the narrator, a little boy at the time. His grandfather; his very best friend, goes away, is hidden in a wooden box, never to be seen again. And it hurts. Life goes on but somehow that death haunts the boy. And it doesn’t help that people say his grandfather is in heaven. He’s missing and the boy misses him. And, then, one day, the boy finds a way to be consoled And the consolation comes from watching a bird, accidentally trapped in a subway car, separated from his best friend and partner, another bird who managed to get off at the next stop. The bird panics at first but then flies on its own into the sky, into freedom, into the consolation of the beauty of trees and wind and sky: a loss and recovery in the world’s unthinking lunge towards survival. And the little boy feels better, feels whole again, never forgetting his best friend but finding—as he flies in his imagination with the bird—that the world and its wonders heal. This is a meaningful, understandable, loving, book that connects man and nature and that gives way to the beauty of life without ever brushing away the pain of deeply felt loss. The illustrations by Ellen Rakatansky are as delicate and sensitive as the tale: an extraordinary book.
Birds of a Feather is an incredibly well-crafted book. Give yourself time, as an adult reader, to read it once or twice yourself before sharing with the kids in your life. It acknowledges that there isn't one right way to feel, and does a great job of exploring and naming different emotions - something that's important for adults and children alike. This is a book that warrants returning to at different stages - of development, and of grief - in order to spark conversations with kids about how they might, or are, dealing with loss.
