Disappointing...I bought this on the spur of the moment for my Kindle to read with my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter I was hoping for some illustrations (which were similar to the design on the cover) to be able to discuss with her,but did not find what I expected. The flow of the text was rather limited and mundane.For me, it felt trendy, uninspired and less than engaging.

My 2-year-old loves this book! The pictures are so cute and the story is just the cutest dialogue ever. Really worthwhile to get this book for your little one!

It's just weird that the boys think the girl's can't do sports &think it's just fun to bully girl's. Not cool😑😒😞!

I purchased this for my 5 year old grandchild. Given the cover, I was surprised to see that there were no pictures whatsoever inside the book. Pretty disappointing.

Lock by Debra Anastasia is book in her not a series. Every book is about another couple and is a standalone. The previous books are Mercy and Havoc and for a better understanding I recommend to read the books in order.Lock is Ember and Lock's heart wrenching story.Ember is Mercy's sister and she grew up lonely. She longed for a loving family of her own. Now, that she's 19 years, she got Mercy and Animal. Ember wants to experience a normal life, ok as normal as it gets with her brother breathing down her neck.And there's Sherlock Sonnet - Lock. He got the short stick in life. He wanted to go to college, but life had other plans. Now he has to play carefully to keep his family safe and himself alive.And then IT happens. He meets Ember and he knows she's his one. But fate/karma say a big fat ummm no.I don't even know where to start with this review; my heads in a complete spin analyzing and thinking on the events that have transpired before my very eyes but one thing I do know from the bottom of my very soul that this for me was, in my opinion, the most real and raw story that Debra Anastasia has written.I have read a lot from this author and every book I have ever opened of hers has touched me in some way, shape or form; Lock was for me the pinnacle of all these other reads ; I am so glad I took a chance on this too.I honestly think this is one journey that just needs to be experienced in all its messy glory.Going in blind here is probably the best thing you can do.So, this is not a traditional love story it is anything but, what we have here is a stark portrayal of strong love, betrayal, danger and need.Messy and sometimes selfish the road to happiness here is paved with heartache and tears.I smiled and cried and also felt the depths of despondency right alongside Ember and Lock.It was such a raw honest read and it gutted me to the core.And I absolutely adored that book; If I could give this more than five stars I so would, this is a story that's going to live within my heart for a very long time.I highly, Highly recommend Lock, Mercy and Havoc. Please do yourself a favour and read the books.

My obsession with this book and this series is at an all time high. Debra Anastasia outdid herself with Lock. With each book she releases in this series the more I need and don’t want her to leave these characters. I wasn’t sure where we were going when I knew Ember was getting her own story but Anastasia blew my expectations out of the water.Ember and Lock are perfect for each other. The wittiness between then was great. But also we were shown just how much they needed one another to survive their situations. They leaned on one another when there was no one else around. They were the Lock and Key.It was also great to see the relationship between Ember and Mercy develop more into that brother and sister bond. We see just how much they mean to each other and we understand a little more why Mercy is the way he is.ANIMAL!!!!! So many hearts for this man lol. After reading Lock my love for Animal is so much stronger than it was for Havoc. He was an added piece to Thai story. We got to see what was going on from Mercy and Animal’s point of view even though the story is about Ember and Lock. We also see how much Animal values Ember.I can’t wait to read this story again and fall in love with these characters again and again. 5 stars for Lock

Lock is a fantastic and absolute must read. Anastasia blew me away with this book. I loved every second of Embers' journey through the Hell that is Mercys'World. It was captivating and I adore the way Anastasia made me fall in love with the characters.I am literally OBSESSED with this world Anastasia created. I have always wanted Embers' story, since the moment she showed up in Mercy. She was the mysterious sister, who knew little of the world in which she was thrust into. Ember desperately doesnt want to be alone, but she decides she wants the freedom of being a young woman. Once she sets out on her journey, she is immediately thrown into a dangerous situation and meets Lock. For them it was insta love. I love Locks goofiness and his willingness to do anything for those he loves. But living in the world of Mercy isnt always rainbows and unicorns. Both Ember and Lock soon realise that in order to survive they have to protect the ones they love at all costs. The situations they find themselves in leaf my heart pounding and my mind screaming. You also get more of Nix, Animal and T. Iove how entwined they all are. And seriously Anastsia loves making my man Nix hurt. I just wanted to run into these pages and hug the big bad skeleton. I just adore him to freaking pieces. So I must say this. You need to read Lock. If you havent read Mercy or Havoc either, then you better do that now. One of my favorites ever.

There is also a lot of name dropping and NYC intellectual cynicism and disdain for anything that smacks of touchy feely or "sock and sandal" wearing new agers or baby boomers.At the 52% point Harris gets to his first meditation retreat and the book gains more focus. The story starts to revolve around the author's attempts to put mindfulness practice into practical practice. That's when the book gained interest for me and the part that redeemed the book for me. I really don't care how difficult Peter Jennings was to work for but how mindfulness and metta practice worked in someone's life. That is here, but I'd suggest skimming the first part of the book if your interest is similar to mine. I feel this is a 3.5 start book. Normally I rate up but the overuse of the term bu-ju (buddhist jewish) got me. It's very clever. I was taken with it the first time I heard it, not in the book, but Mr. Harris is like that annoying dinner guest who says something clever that's appreciated the first time through, but wears the thing out after the third iteration and by the tenth or twelfth repetition has become annoying.

I purchase most of my reading material based on the honest amazon reviews from John Q. Public. All the reviews from this book left out a key factor I wish I'd known. ... it's totally an AUTOBIOGRAPHY. It's not a "self-help" positive book to change your thinking, change your life. It's the career path story if Dan Harris written by Dan Harris. He outlines his entire career and then veers off to his skepticism of the 'self-help" industry. Eventually he summarizes bits of spitual and meditative knowledge but 80% if it is about him and his career.It's a fine book of you'd like a peek into the world of network news, however, definitely not worth investing your time to read if you're seeking better insight on how meditation and positivity can improve your attitude. 》》》》》NOT A "SELF-HELP" BOOK as it is portrayed.

Expecting a little more. This is half a personal story and a critical examination of the art of being mindful, especially by meditation. After deciding to give it a 2nd chance and 2nd read, I chose to skip the beginning chapters and/or speed read to about chapter 6 or 7. Then the book was more palatable for me. (Self-help and fiction is not my typical choice for reading... I prefer historical non-fiction) The last summarizing chapter seemed rushed and could have used a few more edits to be both eloquent and succinct. Still can't decide if the author was using a thesaurus or if he really uses that diverse vocabulary in his real life.To be fair, it seemed like an honest account of the author's experience. I think he was authentic in his vulnerability in telling his story. I wish him well in his life. But I would have thought seeing and reporting on really awful shit all over the world would give more perspective. I guess everyone's different. I think everyone can find something useful, however small, within the pages of the book.

concise book, and i am ready to walk venice. very informative, as the book is broken down into tours of neighborhoods; tours if you only have about 12 hours. each section talks about a specific area. it has insider tips as well.

This is an awesome book...the best one we have found. Our son was over on Sunday and he and his wife are going to Venice in September and he ordered it on the spot!!

Can't wait to take some of these walks. Very well illustrated and organized.

Love the way this is divided into neighborhoods with highlights and lesser well known spots should you have extra time to spend in the area. Very excited to put this to use in near future

What insight into humanity's imagination!Every other page I exclaimed in delight at some marvelous story or ritual that Russell has uncovered - either in an ancient text he has found in some dusty archive, or by direct observation of its practice today. Consider the characters of Mandaean mythology. There is Krun, the flesh mountain, who according to Russell "sounds a bit like Jabba the Hutt"; the dragon Ur, who sits above an ocean of flammable oil, and, Russell's professed favorite, the demon Dinanukht, "who is half man and half book and 'sits by the waters between the worlds, reading himself.'"Or consider the Kalasha, whose rule-makers seem to have had a touch of OCD: "The right hand, the male sex, the high mountains, purity, odd numbers, and life all were affiliated with each other; to these were opposed the left hand, the female sex, the low valleys, impurity, even numbers, and death. So the men sat on the right-hand side of their houses and the women on the left. Likewise, it was men who herded the goats and women who planted crops, men who went into the mountains and women whose place was in the valleys, and women who were prone to all kinds of impurity." Russell then tells how "I was scolded for touching a village house as I passed it, since even this made it impure, and meant more juniper branches would need to be burned to restore its pristine state."2. You'll learn a lotThe author wears his learning lightly, yet it bursts through on every page. What I appreciated especially was the enormous range of his references. For example, a modern Mandaean tells Russell that "I am sure there was a time when Mandaean women could be priests, not just men." Russell not only is able to confirm the particular fact about Mandaeanism: "She was right: in the Drasa da Yehia [a Mandaean holy book], a Jewish woman converts to Mandaeanism and becomes a priest." But he also mentions in passing: "Similarly, in ancient Babylon women could serve as priests. For that matter, women occasionally achieved secular positions of power in the ancient Middle East. The ancient Persian navy had a female admiral - Artemisia, back in the fifth century BC - and in the third century AD Palmyra had a powerful queen, Zenobia."He also gives fascinating philosophical and historical context for many of his observations. For example, while describing asceticism, he speculates about the philosophical source of the self-denial: "Society was technologically advanced... Yet cesspits had to be cleaned out by hand, diseases such as typhoid were common, and wounds might easily develop gangrene. The body's weakness and foulness were in strange contrast to the intellect's amazing achievements. Since at this time it was not generally understood that the intellect had any connection with the brain (Galen realized that it did, but Aristotle had thought the brain existed just to release heat from the body), it was easy to suppose that the mind, or soul, could survive without the messiness of the body." What a striking thought - and how simply, and gracefully, argued.3. Last chance to see?Apart from at the very end, Russell does not say much about what *he* thinks about these religions and what's happening to them: he is the dispassionate academic observer, if one with unusual skill, intrepidity, and verve. He allows his subjects to speak for themselves. But when they do, it is often with considerable passion, beauty, and insight. Consider George, a Palestinian living in a Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. "Coming here [America] was the worst decision I ever made," he tells Russell. "I thought it would be like a salad, every ingredient taking on flavor from the other. It's more like a blender - everything ends up gray."And this is one reason these religions may not be here for much longer, to say nothing of their more violent and deliberate destruction in recent years and months. The modern world must bear a debt of gratitude to Russell for writing this book: the product of a lifetime of learning, and years of travel in the most dangerous places on earth. That his documentation of these ancient religions has yielded something of enduring beauty - and that is, dare I say it, a page-turner - is remarkable. I urge you to buy it.

The subject matter of this book is inherently interesting: small, isolated groups of followers of ancient religions in the middle east. I learned a lot from this book and have recommended it to friends, with a couple of caveats. Too often it read like a travelogue of people the author had talked to and experiences he had. This subject cries out for pictures and maps. The few that were in the book were of poor quality and did not focus on important aspects of the religion or region. I found myself going on-line a lot to dig for images and more detailed general and historical descriptions of the groups described in the book. Nonetheless, I would read it again.

Before reading this book, I had the feeling that it would be sad book with a lot of horrible stories, and in my aspects it was, but it is also a book about resistance and survival. People generally have the impression that Middle East is overwhelmingly Muslim region with little diversity. After reading this book, the readers will come away with the knowledge that it’s not the case. Even amongst the Muslims, the diversity of believes is fascinating.The book starts with talking about Mandaeans, who mostly reside in Iraq. They are ancient people, with beliefs rooted in as far back as Babylon. There aren’t that many of them left in Iraq and their situation has become even more precarious after the fall of Sadam Hussein and the subsequent violence in Iraq. The book also talks about Yazidis, who reside in Northern Iraq. They have higher population than Mandaeans, but due to their geography they are facing challenges from radical Islamists groups. They have interesting belief system, with mixture of Islamic, Hellenistic Greek, and other Ideas. Druze, who reside in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and other countries, are a fascinating people. It was surprising for me to read that, even to this day, how much Druze were influenced by Greek philosophers. There are many things that Yazidis, Mandaeans, and Druze share.Zoroastrians are one of the more familiar of the groups discussed in the book. It was the dominant reglion in Iran before Arab conquest of the country. And most Zoorastrians now reside outside of Iran. Although the religion is in the decline, but many of its ideas and traditions have survived in Iran and other countries.It was fascinating to read about Samaritans. Maybe less than one thousand of them remain. They are ancient people who are close to but differ with Jews. They are trying to balance and survive by learning how to balance their precarious situation, as they are sandwiched between Jews and Muslims. The chapter on Copts was interesting. Many Copts have been forced to migrate to Europe and North America. But due to their large numbers, they are not in danger of dying out. Nonetheless, they are in a difficult situation in Egypt.In the end the book talks about pagan (kafir) people residing in the northern areas of Pakistan. Overall, the book does an excellent job of describing all these ancient people, their beliefs, and the kinds of dangers they are facing. Increasingly, globalization and accessibility to previously remote areas, is going to have dire consequences for ancient cultures with smaller numbers, and that are found in the midst of intolerant hostile societies.I immensely enjoyed reading this book. It’s a must read if you have interest in the Middle East and it’s religions, cultures, traditions, and how they are being impacted by the rise of intolerant ideas. The only hope, as one reads through this book, is that these people have survived similar fates before.
