My niece loves these books!

~4/5We don't get too much actual volleyball in this volume. The team has to prepare for the training camp in Tokyo, but first they have to deal with exams. And there are a good few who do not excel in school. Somewhat surprisingly, Kageyama struggles with school, and unsurprisingly so does Shoyo. They're both awful. But everyone works together to study and memorize and do their best on the coming finals.During this, we meet a new character. Yachi is a first year, and she's trying out for their manager, since the third-years will be leaving soon. She's very hesitant, but she's smart and crafty. I think she'll fit in rather well. Her and Shoyo are already forming a friendship, unsurprisingly.Kageyama and Shoyo get to meet the star of Shiratorizawa in this volume, and it's an odd stand-off. It leads to the training camp, where everyone is putting their all into being better. I was surprised that we're not getting too much actual in-game volleyball during this, but more character growth and relationship progression. Shoyo in particular seems to be taking a step forward.Another new character we meet is Ryunosuke's older sister. She's feisty and a fighter, and I like her. She gives Shoyo a surprising insight into the original “Little Giant”. I didn't actually put much thought into the two meeting at any point, but it seems to be hinted at a couple times here. That should be interesting, even if it doesn't happen for a while.I'm very into this series by this point. V9 gives us a reprieve from the intense volleyball prefectural tournament of the previous volume to focus on character development and evolution. This evolution spans both new characters as well as old characters. It was a well executed experience that made for actual swift reading.For new characters, Yachi was introduced as someone who naively followed Shimizu into exploring what the Karasuno volleyball club was about. Her quick interaction with her fellow first years was shown to seeming inspire her continue to pursue the club. Thankfully her interaction with Hinata brought about a moment of growth for Yachi which still, to this day, remains one of my favorite set of chapters in the manga (Villager B).For old characters, Hinata and Kageyama realized just how far they were behind the other teams. This was highlighted in a well executed set of panels in which they had a discussion with the best in their prefecture, Ushiwaka. Ushiwaka likened Karasuno to that of a barren cement plot, while other teams or individuals were a rich, lush bountiful garden full of flowers ready to be harvested. It was amazing.I think one of the best parts of this volume was the artwork. Furudate really hit it out of the park with the page spreads constantly. The panel with Ushiwaka was actually the most iconic in the volume. Another page spread with Hinata on the poster from Yachi was another extremely memorable and well drawn page, shame about the spine interrupting a few of these.Overall, the plot, both discussed here but also the parts not discussed (including the start of the next arc, a training camp) was on point. It moved at a great pace. It also showed that Furudate can keep the manga interesting even when the characters are not knee deep in a tournament.The art was amazing as well.~Extras this volume included the usual drawings and comments on the pages between chapters. Unfortunately there was no afterword or omake/bonus pages~

Great book! All the basic fundamentals here in this book.

Book came in good time, in very good condition. No complaints, however, if you'd like to use (or are asked to use) the website that helps you write your speeches, you will have to either buy this book brand new (and probably from the school bookstore) in order for the code to be included, or purchase the code separately--it was over $25 last I checked. The code is NOT included with a used book, though this had no bearing on my own needs. Thanks for the great book! It saved me over 50 bucks buying it here. :)

This book focus' on key terms and not content. In short, this could be easily replaced with a dictionary containing only the terms that the book chooses. The content is bland, poorly written and terribly boring.If you're a teacher, department chair, or tenured professor, I strongly urge you to reconsider employing this book. It's in it's 7th edition and is absolute garbage that's being pushed by Cengage (big shock, right?). There is so little that has changed from the 6th edition in terms of meaningful content. The dates, names, presidents and current events have been changed but it has absolutely no significant content changes in terms of communication delivery.It's a terrible thing when Cengage continues to make millions off of poorly written, bland textbooks that are sold to hundreds of colleges across America. Please, department chairs and professors DO NOT EMPLOY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASSES.

In the book's defense, I bought this textbook for a college course that I didn't like. It was a great outline to public speaking, but I often turned to Google instead.

I like this book because it gives clear and exact instructions, tips, and examples for many different types of speeches such as informative(research based), eulogies, persuasive speeches. etc.I would recommend this book to anyone who is taking a public speaking course. I have found it to be a useful study guide for me in this class that I'm taking now.

When a LDS homebuilding blogger turned into "friend" of mine on FB and Insta in 2012 emailed me last week (2018) to tell me she left the Mormon Church, I about fell off my Bible believing chair. I shared her story to some friends at my church who recommended this book. I got it two days ago and did not put it down! I haven't read a book cover to cover in probably 10 years. This is almost like an insider spy novel and it's non-fiction! I have prayed over 25 years to see one Mormon come to true faith in the living God, in Jesus Christ. Ever since I visited the LDS museum when I was young in Carthage Illinois where Jospeh Smith was killed, I had a heart for these people. I had the grace of God to know the truth of the scripture in the Old and New Testament. I could see that the "dollar bill" the elders of the museum were showing and telling me about was a fake dollar bill. This book does an excellent job of explaining Mormon doctrines and then the truth comparatively. There is a appendix section in the back of book showing the Mormon teaching to the Christian Biblical teaching. This is my first review ever and I encourage anyone to get this book! Excellent!

Being brought up seventh day Adventist with a Jewish rabbi living on one side and Mormons on the other. .I have always been curious about these two cultures. When my sister married a Mormon and moved to Provo strange things in the RELIGION caused her to flee to Canada where she lives now.that's why I had to get this book..to find out about the stuff my sister won't tell me..what's really col about this book is that at the end there are five pages of verse to verse comparisons on the book of Mormon versus what the bible says..stuff like polygamy. ..becoming gods..and topics point blank and out there for comparisons. The story itself is gripping spell binding and I couldn't put it down! THANKYOU Lynn for having the courage to tell it all! !!!

Excellent book!! After having a chance to give the gospel to some Mormon missionaries in my town I felt as if I had not done it quite right. I bought this book and reading Lynn’s story really helped me to understand more about how a Mormon thinks. She creates compassion with her words, not antagonism, and shows you the best way to try to reach Mormons with the truth.

Everything written in this book was exactly the way I was raised. Thank you for putting it in words and on paper so that others can understand where I came from, how I was raised, and where I am in my life now. I still struggle, trying to untangle biblical truths with Mormon teaching, but I know God loves me as I am.

Just finished this book. It was simply wonderful. It is well written and you can feel the emotions and passion for family. Lynn Wilder and her entire family are very brave and she, a brave author. It takes a lot of courage to do what she did especially listen, learn, discover, understand, and express her feelings.I'm very familiar with this faith, as I was engaged to a devout Mormon and on my way to becoming one. Then one day I was told that I was not permitted to wear a cross that was my dad's because they don't believe in them as they focus on the Resurrection. That made me stop in my tracks and think and what did it matter anyway?Knowing how comforting the Mormon community is and focus on family I could have easily found myself questioning but still bound to the community. This book not only explains about the church but personally. I could feel every emotion, doubt, shock that the author felt. She was lucky her whole family stayed together while so many others are not as fortunate. I hope this book helps others.

I liked the story of Lynn and her family’s exit from the Mormon web. As another long-term recovering ex-LDS, this book well describes the drama within the church that sucks you in initially, and keeps you locked into the cult of Christian-like life although doctrines of the Bible are distorted. A fine read.

As I look at Mormon neighbors and friends, their clean lives, their lifestyle, I know I was never truly accepted for what I was.A mere Christian.It has never been enough, for them.And the young missionaries continue to ring our doorbell, even after I’ve told them I’ll never join their church.This book is like a breath of fresh air!I’ve never lived in Utah, but moved to the Mormon stronghold of Mesa, Arizona. I know the feeling of not having pioneer roots in western USA. It’s one of the hundreds of irritating things that are a constant reminder of why I am so grateful to my Biblical Jesus for being enough. Just enough. Just what I need. The Prince Warriors by Priscilla Shirer and Gina Detwiler is so much more than I thought it was! Is it a beautifully written story that will appeal to boys and girls in upper elementary and middle school? The answer: a resounding yes! The characters and dialogue are realistic, well-written, and on point. Kudos to the authors for using the written word to spark the desire to go on a grand adventure within the pages of a book!However, as I continued flipping the pages, I realized I was no longer reading as an adult reviewing a piece of juvenile literature. I was a child of God being drawn into a metaphor describing the power of prayer, and my calling as a warrior princess in the Kingdom of God. As Jesus used parables to teach truth to the people of His day, the pictures painted in this epic tale of adventure illustrate the truth of Scripture.As a forty-one year old who has known Jesus for thirty years, after reading this book, I came away with a better understanding of the Holy Spirit, the power of Scripture, the manipulation that drives the ways of the enemy, and most importantly, the true impact of the armor of God.Should you buy this book for your children? No. Buy this book for yourself. Read it. Then, give it to your children, or someone else's children. Discuss it with them. This is not just a book to read and enjoy. The Prince Warriors is a discipleship tool you will want to refer to over and over again.

I bought the series plus an extra of the first book for my boys. My oldest is 14 and reading it on his own. He hates reading so the fact that this story has Xavier the big cool brother in it was awesome! My youngest 5 and 7 year olds hand me the book multiple times a day asking for me to read as much as possible. They are trying to beat their big brother so they can start book 2 first. The boys love this book. It is bringing God's word alive for them!!! I am also enjoying it so I don't mind reading more and more. Don't hesitate no matter the age. No matter what dangers the kids face God protects them through it all. Want your children to learn how to help a friend in need, have courage, not tell even a white lie?? This is the book. My boys do not sit still even long enough for breakfast much less to listen to Mom read. Hearing them tell me what these stories are about and seeing the information really sink in has been amazing!!!. They are so enthralled by jumping off of cliffs and running after ents that for once they actually hear the moral of each characters adventure. If you put the books together you can see the land of Ahoratos.

This is the book you will not be able to put down. It has so much truth in it. What a fascinating way to describe spiritual warfare. This is a book every young person should read both boys and girls. I am in my fifties and could not put this book down. Looking forward to reading the next book. Wish there were about 30 to follow so I could just keep reading one right after the other.

My 13 year old loved the book and couldn't put it down. He read it in 2 days and he is very picky about books. I hope that the devotional and future books in the series come out in the kindle edition as well.

Yes, this is a young adult/child level vocabulary and structure. But, as a Grammy who pre-reads books for my grandkids, it is filled with lessons for christians of all ages. Set in the "real world", kids from a neighborhood rec center are drawn into another world. They enter that world when they are called, as normal kids. They clothe themselves in amazing armor that directs them, protects them, and, at times, corrects them. Exciting page-turner teaches kids to live as God's warriors.

This series is AMAZING! I bought them first for myself, and loved them! Then I read them aloud to my boys (at the time 6 and 5), and they loved all three and listened on the edge of their seats! I have since bought Book 1 several more times to give as a gift. This is a great adventure trilogy for boys or girls ages 5 or 6 to 14/15. The characters in the story are middle school age, so high school kids may find the characters too childish, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult! It has a bit of a modern day Narnia feel to it, but with fresh new ideas. It is about 4th - 7th grade reading level, and it moves quickly. I definitely recommend.

While the other reviewers said this series was appropriate for middle school aged kids, I'd have to disagree. It's definitely geared toward 5th grade and under. I was hopeful my son would love this series, as it's his genre of preference, but he closed the book after 2 chapters, as it was "too young" for him. I'll be saving it for my younger son when he's a bit older.

I absolutely loved this book! My Bible Study group just finished Priscilla's Study on The Armor of God, and one of the members told me about this series for children. For children, my foot! It was really great reading for this adult, and especially so after completing the study. I plan on reading it to my grandson in July when he is here on vacation. I read it on my Kindle. Can anyone tell me if the hard copy has pictures that might add to his enjoyment of the book?

As a writer of poetry and novels, I have also taught writing for decades. One frustration I have always had was the typical teacher who puts off poetry until May and then does a quick romp through haiku and badly rhyming verse. This is not poetry. What is missing for these students is the transformative power of poetry. I have used Kwame Alexander's books of verse in classes with kids and they have used his poems as frames for developing their own voices. In this book, Alexander lays out a complete unit of study of poetry and also instructs kids on how to publish their own works. I know from the annual anthologies I help kids produce that publication affirms them as writers in the world beyond the classroom. Start the year with poetry. It is the foundation of writing. If you can write a poem with skill and craft and most importantly, heart, you can write anything. Thank you, Kwame Alexander.

Not only is Alexander a remarkably engaging writer, whose "Booked," "Crossover," and "Solo" appeal endlessly to the 8th graders I teach, but he's a master teacher. "The Write Thing" is just the juice my workshop needed. As is the case with everything of his I pick up, I'm hooked. The other thing is this: if you don't teach at all, but aspire to write better - check it out. I engage in the exercises with my students daily and am a better, braver writer for doing so.

I run a novel writer's group that focuses mostly on plot. I can see using Kwame's method to teach adults good structure, word choice and revision. I never saw value in poetry, but after reading this book I have a new appreciation for an art form that has been neglected and is seeing a resurgence. Wonderful resource.

This is an easy read b with so many helpful tips in running a poetry workshop. Kwame is quite engaging. Definitely recommend.

"1776" by master historian David McCullough is a brilliantly conceived and executed book about the origins of the Revolutionary war. The book is not particularly long (by the standards of historical texts, anyway), but is very well documented with an amazing array of sources. I was particularly impressed with the taut prose McCullough used: not only was every message conveyed concisely and with great, meaningful nuance, but the entire editorial manner of the book was brilliant. He seemed to always find the exact right blend of historical recollection, factual data, and personal anecdote. In particular the selection of quotations from personal letters, journals, and diaries was masterful: the quotes always managed to give the reader a true sense of the feeling of the moment.The book is in many ways a chronicle of the "Battle of the Georges," in that both George Washington and King George III are well defined and not pigeonholed into their stereotypical roles of "hero" and "buffoon" respectively. I think that McCullough does a particularly good job of capturing the essence of Washington, especially in the closing months of 1775 and beginning of 1776. He never glosses over Washington's faults or miscalculations (an example being Washington's desire for a frontal assault on Boston in early 1776, in which he was, thankfully, overruled by his Council of War), but equally praises him for his strengths, which were much greater in magnitude and importance.I was glad that McCullough spent so much time on the true struggle for independence, and the despair that Washington and his allies endured at the outset of the war. I didn't previously appreciate the magnitude of the dire straits the Americans were in at that point, and I suspect that most other readers do not either. The use of Washington's private correspondence enormously enhances the horrible conditions in which the war began.The focus on less well-known events also improves the book immensely. I was especially impressed with the account of the siege of Boston and in particular the details of the operation in the Heights of Dorchester. I previously did not have a proper appreciation for the intricate logistical genius of Washington. The incident also serves to illustrate Washington's brilliance for selection of subordinates and ability to delegate, two oft-overlooked yet key attributes of successful General officers.Although this book is not as in-depth as some other (longer) historical accounts available, I think that McCullough penned a superior work to other books on the subject. His ability to phrase every passage perfectly, and his editorial inclinations which enable him to know what to include and what to leave out are second to none. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

As a proud American who, I'm ashamed to admit, knew next to nothing about the details of the Revolutionary War, McCullough's "1776" was a much-needed history lesson for me. Written lucidly and grippingly throughout, "1776" provides a strong foundation for one's study of this most critical period of our nation's history, and has inspired me to continue my own studies by reading as much as I can about the revolution and its meaning, both then and now. One also comes away with a sense of awe toward General (and later President) George Washington. The extensive bibliography that McCullough has provided is more than enough for a lifetime of study.I think that those Americans who read this book will, like me, feel more strongly patriotic and value more greatly the selflessness of those who fought for our country in its infancy. And I think that non-Americans who read it will better understand what it means to be an American, and hopefully see our country in a more favorable light. Yes, I realize that America has its problems, both currently and historically, and that we're certainly not beloved by everyone throughout the world, but it's nonetheless moving to at least try and perceive what we mean when we talk about the "American spirit": that feeling of unbounded liberty that allows us to truly pursue happiness. "1776" offers a path.

After reading six of Mr. McCullough's books, I've come to the conclusion that the author could write an engrossing informative work about even unclogging a toilet. In '1776' he explains how the pivotal year was make-or-break for our rebellious country. The book begins in the summer of 1775 Britain where King George III and Parliament are arguing about the situation in America. Mr. McCullough is exceedingly fair in assessing the people involved on every side of the dispute here and in the United Kingdom. The stakes were high for both sides. Understandably the person at the center of the author's book is General George Washington. '1776' shows why Washington came to epitomize our country's aspirations and really was the only logical choice to be the United States' first president.The book has a generous 32 pages of black-and-white as well as color illustrations. Mr. McCullough demonstrates how weather, lack of intelligence, chance, communication, supplies, recruitment efforts, and luck played important roles in the outcomes. I found it interesting and laughable how both sides kept declaring their victories or lucky breaks were God's will. George Washington is front and center in the book but the author also focuses on others who have been lost to history except to the most avid history buffs. On the American side, such important figures as Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, and Joseph Reed are given credit for their efforts. On the British side, the central figure is General William Howe. '1776' avoids myth building by explaining in detail the condition of the troops, Loyalist who hoped Washington and his small ragtag army would be defeated, military successes and blunders, the states' reluctance to risk their troops on what many viewed as a lost cause, acts of courage as well as cowardice, and horrible acts done by both sides.Great history makes an effort of giving an accurate representation of what was and not what people wish it to be. The United States is no different than any other country in trying to whitewash uncomfortable aspects of our past. Politicians and demagogues are especially zealous at spreading the patriotic manure of our country’s complete moral purity. Mr. McCullough is a necessary corrective to their jingoistic bilge. He is one of those historians who not only tells a compelling story but shows our past's successes, failures, and mixed results. '1776' only covers one year but what a year it was. The reader will conclude the book truly understanding how close we were to remaining under British rule.
