This guidebook contains information new to me even though I have visited Venice several times before. I am looking forward to putting this new knowledge to work when I travel back to Venice later this summer.

concise book, and i am ready to walk venice. very informative, as the book is broken down into tours of neighborhoods; tours if you only have about 12 hours. each section talks about a specific area. it has insider tips as well.

This is an awesome book...the best one we have found. Our son was over on Sunday and he and his wife are going to Venice in September and he ordered it on the spot!!

Can't wait to take some of these walks. Very well illustrated and organized.

Love the way this is divided into neighborhoods with highlights and lesser well known spots should you have extra time to spend in the area. Very excited to put this to use in near future

What insight into humanity's imagination!Every other page I exclaimed in delight at some marvelous story or ritual that Russell has uncovered - either in an ancient text he has found in some dusty archive, or by direct observation of its practice today. Consider the characters of Mandaean mythology. There is Krun, the flesh mountain, who according to Russell "sounds a bit like Jabba the Hutt"; the dragon Ur, who sits above an ocean of flammable oil, and, Russell's professed favorite, the demon Dinanukht, "who is half man and half book and 'sits by the waters between the worlds, reading himself.'"Or consider the Kalasha, whose rule-makers seem to have had a touch of OCD: "The right hand, the male sex, the high mountains, purity, odd numbers, and life all were affiliated with each other; to these were opposed the left hand, the female sex, the low valleys, impurity, even numbers, and death. So the men sat on the right-hand side of their houses and the women on the left. Likewise, it was men who herded the goats and women who planted crops, men who went into the mountains and women whose place was in the valleys, and women who were prone to all kinds of impurity." Russell then tells how "I was scolded for touching a village house as I passed it, since even this made it impure, and meant more juniper branches would need to be burned to restore its pristine state."2. You'll learn a lotThe author wears his learning lightly, yet it bursts through on every page. What I appreciated especially was the enormous range of his references. For example, a modern Mandaean tells Russell that "I am sure there was a time when Mandaean women could be priests, not just men." Russell not only is able to confirm the particular fact about Mandaeanism: "She was right: in the Drasa da Yehia [a Mandaean holy book], a Jewish woman converts to Mandaeanism and becomes a priest." But he also mentions in passing: "Similarly, in ancient Babylon women could serve as priests. For that matter, women occasionally achieved secular positions of power in the ancient Middle East. The ancient Persian navy had a female admiral - Artemisia, back in the fifth century BC - and in the third century AD Palmyra had a powerful queen, Zenobia."He also gives fascinating philosophical and historical context for many of his observations. For example, while describing asceticism, he speculates about the philosophical source of the self-denial: "Society was technologically advanced... Yet cesspits had to be cleaned out by hand, diseases such as typhoid were common, and wounds might easily develop gangrene. The body's weakness and foulness were in strange contrast to the intellect's amazing achievements. Since at this time it was not generally understood that the intellect had any connection with the brain (Galen realized that it did, but Aristotle had thought the brain existed just to release heat from the body), it was easy to suppose that the mind, or soul, could survive without the messiness of the body." What a striking thought - and how simply, and gracefully, argued.3. Last chance to see?Apart from at the very end, Russell does not say much about what *he* thinks about these religions and what's happening to them: he is the dispassionate academic observer, if one with unusual skill, intrepidity, and verve. He allows his subjects to speak for themselves. But when they do, it is often with considerable passion, beauty, and insight. Consider George, a Palestinian living in a Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. "Coming here [America] was the worst decision I ever made," he tells Russell. "I thought it would be like a salad, every ingredient taking on flavor from the other. It's more like a blender - everything ends up gray."And this is one reason these religions may not be here for much longer, to say nothing of their more violent and deliberate destruction in recent years and months. The modern world must bear a debt of gratitude to Russell for writing this book: the product of a lifetime of learning, and years of travel in the most dangerous places on earth. That his documentation of these ancient religions has yielded something of enduring beauty - and that is, dare I say it, a page-turner - is remarkable. I urge you to buy it.

The subject matter of this book is inherently interesting: small, isolated groups of followers of ancient religions in the middle east. I learned a lot from this book and have recommended it to friends, with a couple of caveats. Too often it read like a travelogue of people the author had talked to and experiences he had. This subject cries out for pictures and maps. The few that were in the book were of poor quality and did not focus on important aspects of the religion or region. I found myself going on-line a lot to dig for images and more detailed general and historical descriptions of the groups described in the book. Nonetheless, I would read it again.

Before reading this book, I had the feeling that it would be sad book with a lot of horrible stories, and in my aspects it was, but it is also a book about resistance and survival. People generally have the impression that Middle East is overwhelmingly Muslim region with little diversity. After reading this book, the readers will come away with the knowledge that it’s not the case. Even amongst the Muslims, the diversity of believes is fascinating.The book starts with talking about Mandaeans, who mostly reside in Iraq. They are ancient people, with beliefs rooted in as far back as Babylon. There aren’t that many of them left in Iraq and their situation has become even more precarious after the fall of Sadam Hussein and the subsequent violence in Iraq. The book also talks about Yazidis, who reside in Northern Iraq. They have higher population than Mandaeans, but due to their geography they are facing challenges from radical Islamists groups. They have interesting belief system, with mixture of Islamic, Hellenistic Greek, and other Ideas. Druze, who reside in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and other countries, are a fascinating people. It was surprising for me to read that, even to this day, how much Druze were influenced by Greek philosophers. There are many things that Yazidis, Mandaeans, and Druze share.Zoroastrians are one of the more familiar of the groups discussed in the book. It was the dominant reglion in Iran before Arab conquest of the country. And most Zoorastrians now reside outside of Iran. Although the religion is in the decline, but many of its ideas and traditions have survived in Iran and other countries.It was fascinating to read about Samaritans. Maybe less than one thousand of them remain. They are ancient people who are close to but differ with Jews. They are trying to balance and survive by learning how to balance their precarious situation, as they are sandwiched between Jews and Muslims. The chapter on Copts was interesting. Many Copts have been forced to migrate to Europe and North America. But due to their large numbers, they are not in danger of dying out. Nonetheless, they are in a difficult situation in Egypt.In the end the book talks about pagan (kafir) people residing in the northern areas of Pakistan. Overall, the book does an excellent job of describing all these ancient people, their beliefs, and the kinds of dangers they are facing. Increasingly, globalization and accessibility to previously remote areas, is going to have dire consequences for ancient cultures with smaller numbers, and that are found in the midst of intolerant hostile societies.I immensely enjoyed reading this book. It’s a must read if you have interest in the Middle East and it’s religions, cultures, traditions, and how they are being impacted by the rise of intolerant ideas. The only hope, as one reads through this book, is that these people have survived similar fates before.

This was a straight forward manual on how to get the most out of the iOS system 12! Some of the tricks was pretty cool and I didn't even know that the phone could have a magnifying glass on it until I read this book! For being as short as it was, it was pretty loaded with some cool tips and tricks to get the most out of your iPhone / iPad!The only I would change was having all the iPhone stuff together and then having a iPad section rather than mix and matched like it was unless my copy was messed up! Overall, if you need to learn what your phone can do and since the holidays are coming up, this would make the perfect Christmas present!Thank You to Liz M. Well written with tips for using Siri, IMessage various apps and more. Easy to follow instructions and good illustrations. Especially useful for people who use their phones for work. About the Author

Julian Smart has degrees from the University of St. Andrews and the University of Dundee. After working on model-based reasoning at the Scottish Crop Research Institute, he moved to the Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute at the University of Edinburgh, where he founded the wxWidgets project in 1992. Since starting Anthemion Software in 1996, Julian has been helping other companies deploy wxWidgets, and he sells tools for programmers, including DialogBlocks and HelpBlocks. He has worked as a consultant for various companies including Borland and was a member of Red Hat's eCos team, writing GUI tools to support the embedded operating system. In 2004, Julian and his wife Harriet launched a consumer product for fiction writers called Writer's Café, written with wxWidgets. Julian and Harriet live in Edinburgh with their daughter Toni. Kevin Hock has degrees from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in Computer Science and Accounting and has taught courses at Miami in both Java and client-server systems. In 2002, he started work on an instant messaging system and founded BitWise Communications, LLC, in 2003, offering both professional and personal instant messaging. Good Book, but, it's obsolete because wxWidgets is past version 3. (it's on 3.2 now) and the book is only up to version 2.xxx so a lot of new stuff is not in the book at all. I am using wxWidgets at a job because Qt has licensing $$$ problems for commercial use. WxWidgets is still very productive and well written, and some Qt programmers don't seem to know how to write modular code. So for cross platform GUI wxWidgets is still great even in 2018.

I read this book in late 2011 and have decided to put forward a review. I like wxWidgets in principle but the book showed me that the implementation and concepts could be improved. Between Qt, GTK, and wxWidgets, there are many similarities between those technologies and the book showcases what makes wxWidgets practical.It is said that wxWidgets received the inspiration for its design from Microsoft MFC. I am familiar with Microsoft MFC from Ivor Horton's Microsoft Visual C++ books and I can concur with that assessment. What was once a strength in how wxWidgets was designed may be less the case today. The wxWidgets book here follows an approach that would be strikingly familiar to anyone who has strong exposure to Microsoft's GUI programming systems. The upside is that the wxWidgets system can be employed in Mac and Linux as well which can greatly open up the audience, use, cost and platform capabilities considerations for a software application.The book does a great job of revealing wxWidgets and is a good introduction to the world of cross platform GUI programming. A couple of good ideas are presented in the book. I like the coverage of wxWidgets as presented in the book. I do think it is unfortunate that there is not an up to date version.

wxWidgets is an application framework for developers who want to develop very good-looking applications for Linux, Windows or Mac. The fact that your application can be re-compiled for any of the three operating systems is definetly an attractive plus. My development is mainly for Linux, and when I first ran accross wxWidgets, I was amazed at how quickly I could get a simple application going in under an hour. Compiling the library is as easy as issuing a few commands from a terminal window, changing to the samples directory, and running make under the minimal sample directory.Bear in mind that developing applications is not for complete beginners. You should know C/C++ already, and be reasonably familiar with your OS and compiler. That way, following the examples given in the book, and reading the source code from wxWidgets samples directory, can get you up and running in a minimum of time. I came from a C background, but I had a reasonably complicated inter-airport messaging system for a local goverment authority working in two weeks, with the help of a serial communications library contributed by another wxWidgets user.The book comes with a CD full of useful tools and community contributions. I have yet to see, in my 30+ years of programming and project management, a framework as complete as wxWidgets. The support from other users is extraordinary, and you can often be talking to the original developers who are more than willing to help you get going. The fact that it is open source ensures this fantastic library will always be improving.This book is something I was awaiting for a long time. It is definetly worth the price (and then some).

For someone first learning wxWidgets, this book is an excellent starting point. It clearly explains each part of the library, from the windowing system right down to the threading and socket layers. In addition, the numerous examples allow the programmer to quicky get up to speed on the concepts presented in each section. The book's only weakness is that it is not a comprehensive reference guide, and must be supplemented by the online help files during everyday programming. For someone just starting out or needing a refresher course on the capabilities of wxWidgets, this is an excellent book.

This book did it for me. Writing a GUI can kick your rear, but this book has what you need.It helps if you have been programming for many years and have college courses in computer graphics.Once you have decided to us wxWidgets, get this book. Sorry, I do not give all 5 stars on principle, there is nothing wrong with this book.

I was never able to get DialogBlocks to build the wx library. Kept freezing halfway through. Eventually I gave up and spent a lot of time setting up an Eclipse environment. (This is on an old Powerbook...) Haven't worked with wx in windows or linux yet, but so far I can say that this book is NOT for the beginner. You should have a pretty solid foundation in windowed application design, makefiles and the gcc linker.This isn't the book's fault, but cross-platform GUI development is still quite complicated. wxWidgets is a great tool that has really grown into maturity, but it is certainly not panacea :) Fortunately, there are some very patient and experienced developers in the wx-user mailing list.

It is great to have a record of all the paintings in the Vatican. The only problem I have is that some of the image quality is not up to par. (Overall the Louvre book has better reproductions but that collection is more accessible.) Several of the Sistine Chapel frescoes are illustrated with images from prior to the restoration that was completed in 1999. In particular the Michelangelo lunettes which are overexposed images of the pre-cleaned frescoes. Also their are a 2-3 heavily pixelated images due to being overly enlarged. Most of the images, and there are almost a thousand, are of good quality. I would recommend Taschen's recent XL book on Michelangelo for a more accurate representation of the Sistine Chapel's frescoes and the "Loggia of Raphael" by Abbeville for the same reason. Glad to have it, but wish the editors dug a little deeper some of the images.

This is a wonderful, ambitious book. It is not a book to be read at one sitting, or really, even 20 sittings. The art work in here can be studied for a long time. The problem is that in order to get all the pieces in, the pictures have to be small. They are not little bitty pictures that you can't see what they are, but there are often more than one to a page. There is also a problem appreciating one with another just as good so close to it. Having said that just to prove that I recognize it is not flawless, it is a fantastic collection. When you consider that nothing gets into a painting unless the artist put it there (unlike a photograph which could have some carelessly tossed item in it) there are hours of consideration on these pages. I am so glad to own it.

My large book promptly arrived and I gasped! The tome itself is like a work my work of art. The DVD is great. I am amazed as to what treasures the Vatican possesses. An incredible collection of the old masters and rooms (like the Borgia rooms) that are too beautiful to be believed. Everything is here, the sculptures, maps, etc. Don't hesitate the book is fantastic. It's right next with my new book on the Louvre and my new wonderful book 'Florence' (this is magnificent!)

I'm actually surprised I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would. It's ok. Some of the paintings are printed so small, I have to get close to the page to see the detail. And I'm actually surprised that this is ALL of the paintings in the Vatican museums... I thought there's be more. Still, it's a well-constructed book... and the nice thing about it is when I got to the Vatican next, I will be able to enjoy the museums at my leisure.

Amazing book, great introduction. I received the book as promised within one day and love it. I wish there were more descriptions for some of the smaller paintings and icons too. The picture quality is great for some but I think some of them are too old and hence don't photograph well. A great 360 of the Vatican, in fact read this and travel.

Beautiful content, however, the binding does not feel like it will hold for very long. That said, I’m still pleased with the purchase

Art and SimonThis one hit all my buttons! Wow it started just with some tasty sexiness, and with all the right feelings!Simon is an omega and at twenty seven he is only in for a one-night stand. As being a Daddy he wants to take care of this boy, for the first time in five years his heart is longing.Simon can’t understand why this beautiful straightforwardly lumberjack wants to take care of him, a invisible omega without the ability to slick.But when they start something together there are some delightful scenes. Hot, steamy and delicious.With Simon’s approaching heat Simon stands before some decisions and when these are taken from him he is devastated.This story, my goodness, I loved it. Art and Simon characters are so kind and flawed.Art being a Daddy with BDSM experience was a delicious addition and very well woven into this story. The joy Art gives Simon but also the hurt, was written in a strong and heartfelt way.Simon his longing and yearning went straight through my heart. Goshh it was emotional.Emotional in the way it made my heart hurt, wetness rolling down my cheeks.It was a good balanced written journey, all area with the right weight. The scenery was wonderful and the whole story original and intriguing. A beautiful bubble with a wonderful diversity of personalities, with books, friends, families, hurt, romance, some kink, red butt, about taking control and giving over, but above all about hope and deep rooted claiming love!I was glued to the pages I read this journey in one breath.

Omegas who can't slick are defective and taboo. Alphas will still take what he offers, but they aren't exactly courteous.What I like: I'm a fan of age difference, particularly guys in their twenties with guys in their forties. Enter hottie, Art, a red headed, flannel shirt wearing Daddy who frequents Simon's book mobile, and doesn't treat Simon like an inferior.What you need to know: The book is A/B/O and contains some of the societal politics of an A/B/O society. The book contains m-preg, and may be rough for someone with infertility to read, if infertility is triggering for you, please be advised.The main critique I have is that their relationship moves so fast. I understand falling into heat and A/B/O. It helps that Art has been interested for awhile, but even with certain emergency factors -- after Art's concerns about his past, he's jumping into a major decision very quickly.I think the characters need more page time to establish more chemistry early on. A few more dates, maybe.The chemistry does get decidedly more concrete and there is some sweet library nesting going on. Overall these two are total cuties, and I'm glad they get their hea. I'd definatly recommend this to anyone into m-preg, a/b/o, daddy kink, and shmoop.Additional note: Art's first partner was an Alpha to Omega trans person, the book has excellent transgender themes and characters for those looking for more transgender representation in their books.

If you're in the mood for some hot mpreg, knotting, heats, nesting, lots of emotional with angsty histories, you gotta give this story a try!This is the second book in the Nerds who Knot series, and although this one does stand well on its own, I think you'd enjoy it more if you read the first one since Isaac is in this one as well.Simon runs a bookmobile - a mobile library, that he drives around - often going to small towns that aren't on his route to get books out to kids that need them most. He yearns for children of his own, but his biology has left him unable for that to happen. On his route, he meets Art, an older alpha who lost his omega five years ago and hasn't fully moved on. The two experience a crazy hot hook up and then both realize that they want more, totally terrified that it's going to fall apart and leave them both even more miserable than they were before.I love the world building in this story, how omegas and alphas work, how Art's previous partner was a trans omega - I just love the thought taken into describing the "rules" to this world.There is plenty of emotion, Simon learning to trust Art, Art learning that he needs to be up front with things, and both of them realizing that they are totally perfect for each other. On their journey together, there is some crazy hot moments between the two of them, a bit of kink, some lovely daddy kink, and it's all just written very sexy and sensual. I loved it!Can't wait for the next book - hey, maybe that sexy alpha professor needs a story!I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Would give this a "0" stars if possible. This vendor is NOT selling the publication of Rilke's book, but has gotten the text and laid it out (probably with MS Word, horrible for layout) and done a cheap printing of it. Am I going to return it? Probably not, only because it's more effort to pack it, take it to the P.O. and mail. But I'm very angry about this book, I do publication layout professionally, and am an editor, so the extra spaces between words, the dropped punctuation, and visually awful layout is an abomination to Rilke's work. I know how they did it: they stripped the text out of an e-book, put it into Word and left-aligned, never proofed it, and sent it to China to be printed. Monstrous. Never buy from this outfit.

Whatever kind of writer or creative artist you are, Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a voice worth listening to. The letters were written in the early 1900s when Rilke was about 30 years old. He wrote ten letters to a young poet named Franz Kappus, offering not only advice but a philosophy on how to cultivate the creative spirit. As a fiction author with three novels out, I often get discouraged. We writers know that art and struggle go hand and hand. I’ve read all the pep blogs about following your passion and keeping the faith, recognizing the common Van Gogh blues, blah, blah, blah. Rilke’s book is such a refreshing look at why a person writes at all. He addresses doubt, loneliness vs solitude, love, and patience. This is probably one of the most impressive of books I’ve read on this subject. The thoughts in this little 100-page book is a true source and one to keep on the night stand. I love to open a page at random and see what Rilke has to say to me for the day. Page 61 told me this morning that “We must embrace struggle. Every living thing conforms to it. Everything in nature grows and struggles in its own way, establishing its own identity, insisting on it at all cost, against all resistance.” This book is for any artist who wants inspiration on how to live as an artist.

Louth's translation of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a mediocre translation, does not match that of M.D. Herter Norton's (Letters to a Young Poet), whose quintessential translation must be the standard for all others of Rilke's work. You cannot see it the following pages in the Look Inside feature, but the following famous passage in Letter 8 is an excellent example. "Mr. Kappus," the young poet, might as well be us, and the passage can be read without the words "dear Mr. Kappus" and stands alone -- at least in the M.D. Herter Norton translation.M.D. Herter Norton's translation (Letters to a Young Poet), Letter 8, reads: "How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are the beginning of all peoples? The myths about dragons that, at the last moment, turn into princesses. Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, who are only waiting to see us, once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is, in its deepest being, something helpless that wants help from us. So, you must not be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up before you, larger than any you have ever seen. If a restiveness like light and cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening to you. That life has not forgotten you. That it holds you in its hand. It will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any agitation, any pain, any melancholy, since you do really do not know what these states are working upon you? ..."Compare this to Charlie Louth's translation of this same passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet):"How can we forget those ancient myths found at the beginnings of all peoples? The myths about the dragons who at the last moment turn into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, only waiting for the day when they will see us handsome and brave? Perhaps everything terrifying is deep down a helpless thing that needs our help. So, dear Mr. Kappus, you shouldn't be dismayed if a sadness rises up in front of you, greater than any you have ever seen before; or if a disquiet plays over your hands and over all your doings like light and cloud-shadow. You must think that something is happening with you; that life has not forgotten you; that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why should you want to exclude from your life all unsettling, all pain, all depression of spirit, when you don't know what work it is these states are performing within you? ... "Note that word order in changed in by Louth to give a different meaning, and this is often the case.Also, compare to Stephen Mitchell's translation of the passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet (Modern Library) and (Letters to a Young Poet):"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand the beginning of all the races, the myths about dragons that are at the last moment transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love. So you mustn't be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up in front of you, larger than any you have ever seen; if an anxiety, like light and cloud-shadows, moves over your hands and over everything you do. You must realize that something is happening to you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand and will not let you fall. Why to you want to shut out of your life any uneasiness, any misery, any depression. since after all you don't know what work these conditions are doing inside you?...."Really, "that wants our love"? Our LOVE? No reason for this translator's license, none at all. Mitchell's translation likewise strips the Letters of poetry, and, of note, his introduction to the Letters is somewhat bizarre.If one goes further back in this letter, to Rilke's discussion of solitude, the demarcation between the beautiful and the mediocre translation is equally clear. I find M.D. Herter Norton's translation by far the most beautiful, poetic and meaningful, although reading other translations can add to the reader's understanding, or else, show the reader which translation speaks to him.On the other hand, here is an opportunity to compare, free of charge, three translations. I have chosen to confine myself to the translation by M.D. Herter Norton's of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, since I don't want to interrupt the flow of reading as I study these great letters, and feel it is best to choose one. It is a shame the M.D. Herter Norton translation is not currently in print in hardcover. Still, there are used copies to be found and I'd rather buy several paperback copies of Norton's than have a nice looking hardcover of a mediocre translation.

I loved it! It reminded of the literature I had to read many years ago, when I was in college. Notice I wrote the verb "had". I am feeling a little guilty of not appreciating the works I had to read, then, and puzzled, by how I admire them now. The content of these letters are timeless.
