Initially, I was excited to use this book as a handbook and trusted resource for feeding our daughter her first foods. We had already decided to go the route of baby-lead weaning, but a large portion of the book is dedicated to convincing me it’s the right decision. Thank you, but I want to get to the feeding! Once the food comes along, the layout is so chopped up by sections and stages and ages and single foods and family meals.... you get my point, it’s hard to navigate as a BLW handbook. There is so much information (and duplicate information) about each food item, it becomes dizzying. Using the index as a guide is out of the question for sheer volume: for example, there are four different references to kiwi in three different sections of the book. Yikes. Finally, I started noticing grammatical errors in the introduction (“you’re little one”) which may not bother some but makes me crazy.Two stars because this could be a good intro to BLW if you have a lot of questions about why to feed your baby this way. As someone who’s already informed of the benefits, but wanted more how-to, this wasn’t for me.

Well, hello common sense! Where ya been? Finally, back to the basics. This approach makes so much sense. As a pediatric speech language pathologist who works with feeding issues I am excited to see the impact of this movement on the population I work with. I do believe that for some kiddos this approach could prevent sensory issues that could land them in my office. Kids learn to manage different textures, flavors and food shapes orally before they really get into the swallowing portion of eating. With spoon feeding pureés the oral sensory experience of it is missed. BRAVO! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This book is a must have whether you're starting from the beginning with a baby led feeding approach or if you started with purées and are still a little nervous about feeding baby table food. We started with BLW and quickly chickened out after our babe's first few little gags. I could not find enough support or resources to make me feel confident I was feeding her solids the "right way". Thankfully I found the Born to Eat social media pages around the same time my baby started refusing to be spoon fed.I could not wait for my copy to ship. The literature reads as if you are bouncing ideas off you're best friend over a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. The recipes we have tried so far have been delish! But, my favorite part(s) of the book are the detailed guide on how to get started, what to start with, and how to prepare and cut for each skill level.Now that I finally feel confident enough in what and how I am feeding my baby, mealtimes are less stressful and more fun - the way they should be!

I must admit that I was skeptical when I picked up this book, but after reading it, I highly recommend it. Born to Eat is full of evidence-based practical tips about feeding and nutrition for the infant/young child (and their families). Although it is packed with research, it reads like a conversation with a good, knowledgeable friend- no judgement, no shame, just encouragement to do what is best for you and your child. I have a feeling I will be referencing this for years to come.

This book is incredible! It's full of science backed research (and references!), beautifully organized, wonderful illustrations, helpful tips, yummy recipes and meal plans! I find the comparisons of how to cut food based on the child's stage to be extremely helpful. This book was written with everyone in mind - from a super talented and experienced cook, to a mediocre cook like myself! It answered all of my questions and addressed fears I had when I started my daughter on solids. I also love their website, instagram page (borntoeatbook), and Facebook page because the authors continue to give tips, meal ideas, abs new info. It was incredibly well thought out. This is definitely a book I will be giving new parents and grandparents.This book received rave reviews by one of the pioneers of Baby Led Weaning, Gill Rapley, as well as countless registered dietitians and culinary nutritionists that are well known in their field. I felt very empowered after reading this book. I will continue to reference it as my daughter grows. Our family is a huge fan of this book.

I am a nutritionist and first time mom so I wanted to make sure I had the right tool to start the feeding process with my son. This book gave me confidence for the research which it counts, by the experience of the authors and their friendly language. I loved that since we started we didn't have to cook "special" food for the baby. Our son was always part of the time of the meal.Today he is almost two years old and he eats a variety of foods, we cook nothing different for him and he eats at the table to share this special time with us. He started to be part of the preparation of food and I think all starts from the fact that we respect his intuition selecting the amount of food he needs to eat and he has the confidence to eat on his own.I truly recommend this book!! We love it!

I helped co-teach this for a ladies Bible study. I felt that the book was very repetitive...same character qualities in multiple women. A number of the women mentioned don't have a lot of information given in the Bible about them, so a lot of it seems to just be assumptions about what it might have been like for them. I'd much rather study Biblical facts.

I got this book to read for a book club with my women's group at church. I wanted to like this book, but I really didn't. I was put off a bit by a man writing all about women, but really didn't appreciate the first chapter being all about women being submissive. I'm in agreement with a biblical view of submission, but having that be the focus of the first chapter in a book on women written by a man was uncomfortable. There were several instances of this type of male focused writing, so I eventually gave up reading it.

No doubt this is one of the best book I have ever read. Our church ladies have used this for our Wednesday Night Meeting. Have learned so much new information that we had no idea about. Highly recommend this book for your Ladies Church and even for individuals to read.

This is the second book I have read from this author. This book does not disappoint. John MacArthur chooses twelve women from the Old and New Testament and does a deep study on them. He uses Scripture to back up his thoughts but adds his opinions for the reader to consider. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these women in some different ways than just the usual teaching about them.

As always I love John MacArthurs work. Perfect for growing in Christ as a woman. Pointing out the handful of women mentioned in thr Word for us; He explains things thoroughly but still is all backed by Scripture. Thank you!

This is an excellent group or personal study of how God used ordinary people to accomplish HIS extraordinary purpose, to complete His plan of Salvation, and to encourage & grow believers. Great personal introspective questions.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The author's perspective on all the women was on target and interesting. I loved his book, "Twelve Unlikely Heroes" and I was glad to find this book. A good read for all Christian women and those curious about the people of the Bible.

Great book. Very detailed and easy to read. Although some of the women in our Bible study find it a bit deep, I find it fascinating that the author can find so much information about these women. I have always liked John MacArthur and respect his narrative as being backed up with scripture but some feel he is adding too much speculation. The only negative perhaps is you cannot break the chapters into sections if you are going to answer the questions at the same time as they encompass the entire chapter. A great deal of information to cover in our 2 hour weekly study-at least for many of the chapters. If you are reading this alone or if your group does not mind buckling down to study this is a wonderful book. I would highly recommend. Received as promised from seller.

I can't say enough about these books. The art is SO BEAUTIFUL. That was what first caught my eye but the story is also so lovely. Can't wait for the next one, but I just read these over and over.

My preordered book was not damaged at all. I love that each recipe has a picture, even includes the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stat boost you get with each one. Lists prep time, cook time, what it pairs well with & even how many servings are in each recipe so you can easily double up on ingredients if you're cooking for your vault party!😍 The last few drinks are alcoholic, but all the Nuka-Colas are kid friendly!!Only complaints.... "Psycho" does not have a recipe.😭

I've had this book for almost two weeks now, and I've enjoyed preparing several meals out of it so far! Each recipe has a full-page picture on the opposite page accompanying it. There are loads of humorous notes and descriptions in the book, as well as some nice artwork on the inside covers and some clever nods to the game (such as the S.P.E.C.I.AL. stats). The quality of the book itself is also great; it's hardcover and printed on high-quality paper. The recipes range from appetizers to desserts and everything in between, and they all have clearly-written instructions including prep time and servings. Some are more difficult to prepare than others but there's many that even a novice cook could pull off with ease.The one thing that was a slight disappointment was that there are few clear instructions on how to adjust the recipes in case you need to substitute ingredients. Some recipes call for ingredients that may be somewhat difficult to find, and having some dietary restrictions myself that may be an issue for some buyers. However, this is a problem I've found with most other cookbooks that aren't specifically tailored for people on a special diet. Overall I think the author did a great job of including a wide variety of recipes, and many of them have ingredients such as coconut milk if you're lactose intolerant. There are even some vegetarian recipes included as well, like the meatloaf. Also, the recipes that call for ingredients such as bison work well with other meats. I tried one with beef and it cooked up wonderfully!Also, as another reviewer mentioned, the Nuka-Cola recipe was more generic than the 17 fruit flavors the game states it has. I wasn't expecting to add 17 different fruits into a drink recipe anyway but there's really only a handful of citrus and cinnamon flavors that come through to differentiate it from regular cola. The Nuka-Cola Quantum recipe seems better in this regard since there's also fruit punch and pomegranate included. Aside from that the drink recipes seem to be tasty, and there's a nice amount that are non-alcoholic as well. I got what I expected and I didn't find the content of the book to be out of setting. For what it is (a Fallout-branded cookbook) I think the author did an excellent job and I've enjoyed flipping through it just to read the notes. If you're either a fan of the game or just a chef looking for some unique spins on recipes (the chili comes to mind) then this is a must-have. Looking forward to the Elder Scrolls one as well!

If you are familiar with Asian cooking you will feel right at home with this cook book. Fortunately for me I am, and I am a huge fallout fan, and I have an Asian market right across the street from my house. If you arnt familiar with Asian ingredients, and don't have access to an Asian market you might have trouble sourcing some of the ingredients. My opinion, this cookbook should have been written with recipes more friendly to the average home cook. Otherwise, the art is lovely and the recipes look interesting, there are no quick, easy recipes in this book, they all require a fair amount of prep and work, so if you have the time and like cooking it will be a fun addition to your collection. If you're a novice cook you may feel a bit overwhelmed, especially since some of the recipes include things like Browning sauce for nuka cola, or citric acid for at least one of the desserts. Honestly, I don't think I would buy another cookbook from this author, but I am happy to have a fallout cookbook for my collection.

I've made 3 receipes so far from this book, Yum Yum devilled eggs, Blamco Mac and cheese, and the Quantum mud pie. Both the non-dessert items had quite a spicy kick to them, but I am wondering if that was the authors intention to simulate the Rads you normally get from eating those pre-war foods found in game. If it was, it's pretty neat! The only issue I have is that a lot of the recipes have hard to find ingredients (duck, lamb, miso paste, a few others). Also in some of the dessert recipes they list "heavy wipping cream" and then "heavy cream". Those two things are the same item. There is a difference between "wipping cream" and "heavy cream/heavy wipping cream", but there is no difference between "heavy cream" and "heavy wipping cream". Just thought that it could be pretty confusing for a beginner dessert maker

This book is great for any cooking level. The best part of this book is that every single recipe has a picture next to it. My favorite thing though is that this includes something for everyone. You've got chicken, beef, ice cream, alcoholic drinks, soups, and even stuff for vegetarians and bakers. Haven't tried any recipes yet but there is a great recipe for Crab Stuffed Salmon (The Mirelurk Queen Steak) that I'm dying to try this weekend. Some recipes call for duck or bison which may be hard to find in some places but these can easily be substituted if need be! Have a great time cooking fellow vault dwellers!

This book has stuff from fallout 3, 4 and 76! I've already made the Nuka cola, the meringues and the chili. They were all really good. There some weird and hard to find ingredients. The chili had coffee which was yummy, but if you eat a lot you may not be able to sleep. My wife and I are gourmet chefs and this book is very in line with that. If you have a refined pallet this is for you. If you don't want to hunt down things like cardamom "pods" and fenigreek this may not be the cook book for you.

Gertrude Bell is probably one of the most interesting women of pre-World War I England. A daughter of privilege and she was educated and curious at a time when women of her class were expected to marry well and have children to police the Empire. Bell broke this mold and was the archetype of the "traveling Englishwoman" of the high British Empire.Bell is today best remembered for her role in building modern Iraq. But the Desert and the Sown takes place before World War I, and details her adventures in Syria. Bell was not a professional archeologist and you will need to look elsewhere for detailed scholarly studies of the places she traveled. Her usual method was to go off and visit some famous or not so famous ruin, spend a day or two there taking pictures and etching inscriptions, and then moving on.But this book is a remarkable travelogue of Syria and Palestine before World War I. She details her travels, the problems, the difficulties, who she met and what they talked about. The Turks rightly viewed her with suspicion - a child of the English ruling class, they saw her as an unofficial English agent, making contact with local tribal leaders who could be used against the Turks if war broke out.The book is a quite remarkable insight into the politics of the near East, and given the current crisis, one that should be read by all looking to figure out where to go next.My only compaint about the book is not Bell's writing, but rather the edition. The photographs would be better served on glossy paper, and better maps should be provided.

Bell was one of many "arabists" who traveled throughout the Middle East near the end of the Ottoman empire. This book is really an interesting travelogue and insight into Middle Eastern culture from the view of a privileged English woman who was viewed as curiosity by those she visited and traveled with. In a way, this is a fairly innocent view of that part of the world, but you could do worse than read this book. Much of the clannish nature of the cultures she wrote about is unchanged from her era (and indeed, from centuries before) and is worth the couple of hours it will take to read this book.

She most certainly could write, and as said, the relevance is still profound in today's world. I also enjoyed her subtle, clever British humor. Yes, I too would have appreciated a map and better quality for the pictures. Still, this book is worth every penny (and they are a modest number of pennies considering what you get in return)!

Excellent book.

I had loved "Gertrude Bell Queen of the Desert Shaper of Nations" by Georgina Howell. Fascinating story of an incredible British woman traveling through the Middle East on her own in the early decades of the 20th century often on camel, visiting various Bedouin and other Nomadic tribes on her own as well as her life in Middle Eastern capitols. So when I saw "The Desert and the Sown: The Syrian Adventures of the Female Lawrence of Arabia" by Gertrude Bell, herself, I knew I had to read it. Great History, fascinating story, particularly insightful and pertinent in view of the where we are in the Middle East today.

A must read for people who want to understand the region and why it is what it is there now. If one looks close enough they will see it never changes either. I loved the book.

Of all the Westerners who decided to explore the Middle East in the last couple of centuries, none seemed to equal Gertrude Bell for her erudition as well as empathy for those who lived there. She writes with passion and wonderful descriptive powers, the subject quote being just one example. The title of the book is derived from Omar Khayyam: "The strip of herbage strown that just divides the desert from the sown." She undertook the journey described in this book in 1905, and declares her motivation in the first sentences: "To those bred under an elaborate social order few such moments of exhilaration can come as that which stands at the threshold of wild travel. The gates of the enclosed garden are thrown open, the chain at the entrance of the sanctuary is lowered, with a wary glance to right and left you step forth, and, behold! the immeasurable world." Later in the book she reports on the resonances from the native people to this sentiment: "...and when I meet the rare horseman who rides over those hills and ask him whence he comes, he will still answer: `May the world be wide to you! from the Arabs.'" Gertrude Bell was fleeing the restrictive atmosphere of Victorian England, ironically experiencing a sense of freedom amongst societies not generally known for female emancipation. The essential factor is unquestionably being "the other," that is, NOT being a member of a given society. Bell's motivation to leave her own society and experiences in the Middle East have always resonated with my own; substitute restrictive Victorian England for the ennui of a consumer society and the sins of a colonial war, and I too found that exhilarating sense of freedom, the ability to run "free and clear," by being the other in a society that let you roam.The book, published in 1907, contains an excellent map which outlines the author's journey. Her journey started in Jerusalem, went through Jericho, Amman, north around the Jebel Druze to Damascus, and on to Homs, Hamah, Aleppo, Antioch, and ending back on the coast, at Alexandretta. The book contains numerous black and white photos, some of the most arresting being the enormous waterwheels at Hamah, on pages 221 & 225 (this was the town that Assad "flatten," killing over 50,000 in 1982), and a tree-shaded well, the Ras Ul `Ain, in the Baalbek Valley on page 187. Overall, her trip covered the area where the land of agriculture abutted the desert towards the East. All of it was part of the Ottoman Empire, in its very last days, and which would be dissolved in not much more than 10 years. One of the many relevancies for today's readers: it was Gertrude Bell who was primarily responsible for cobbling together three disparate provinces of that empire into present-day Iraq, and indeed, she has been informally dubbed "the Queen of Iraq." Her actions then are yet another verification of Faulkner's dictum: "The Past is not Dead; It is not even the Past."Of particular interest to me was her report, compliments of the amazing "desert telegraph," that relays information from mouth to mouth over hundreds of miles. And she was at least that far away, but thanks to that "telegraph" of the Shammar tribe, she was able to report on the events around Hail, where Abdul Aziz ibn Saud had just defeated Ibn Rashid, driving him back to his hometown, and restricting him to land only a few miles to the south of it.(p 44-48)Her erudition extended to the Arab poets of the "jahaliya," the time of "darkness," before the Prophet Mohammed. In particular, she quotes Imr ul Kais, who, she says: "...had seen the Pleiades caught like jewels in the net of a girdle...". She sums up her praise for these pre-Islamic poets: "Born and bred on the soil of the desert, the singers of the Age of Ignorance have left behind them a record of their race that richer and wiser nations will find hard to equal." As for the love of the land, she says: "The Arabs do not speak of desert or wilderness as we do. Why should they? To them it is neither desert nor wilderness, but a land of which they know every feature, a mother country whose smallest product has use sufficient for their needs."Overall, the book is an excellent read, both for its time and place, as well as the light it sheds on today's latest developments. Recommend this series and this book for those who like action and adventure and humor. Also recommend for the reluctant reader. These hard to put down books have been read by all 3 of my boys and myself. The author uses this book to explore some of the stories touched upon in previous books, but not detailed. The stories that reveal the characters' pasts and their smaller adventures. The premise behind the stories is of a present day archaeologist and his assistants are excavating the remains of a castle, when one of them finds the ruins of a Ranger's cabin and a manuscript filled with long-lost tales.My boys were between 10 and 12 when they started reading this series. My now 13 year old is enjoying these added adventures and I have a feeling when my other 2 come home from college, they will read this as well.

It was an interesting direction the author decided to take with these short stories that some up the time, about five years or so after the events of book 10. The short stories are presented as a stories found by archaeologist centuries after the event. There is great balance with in the stories themselves each entertaining and enthralling in their own ways. While it is easy to guess as to what some of the stories might contain they were a few surprises. Overall it was an enjoyable read, with just enough bittersweetness to some of the stories and laughter in others to make it memorable.

There were a lot of questions and mysteries and holes in the Ranger's Apprentice story. There was the tantalizing affair of Cassandra and Horace's wedding. The story of Halt's role at Hackam Heath. And, of course, the biggest question, the unsolvable issue of Will's father and mother, his arrival at Castle Redmont's doorstep, and Halt's involvement in it all.The Lost Stories explain all of that, and then some. Flanagan answered the riddle of Halt's recruitment by the Ranger's Corps in 'The Hibernian', which was five chapters that I would've happily paid ten times the book's price for (but the set price is just dandy). He included two of Gilan's adventures, or rather one of Gilan's and one of Jenny's. The short story 'Dinner for Five' explains how Jenny develops feelings for the Ranger. 'The Inkwell and the Dagger' describes how Gilan took care of Foldar, a previous follower of the vanquished lord Morgorath who was terrorizing the countryside. Of course, there was an entertaining little scuffle, courtesy of Will and his mentor, as they were trying to arrest some moondarkers (thieves that trick ships into sailing head-on to rocks), an excursion to search for a stolen pet, and a nasty occurrence that involves a three-legged wolf.I thought that Will's understanding of Tug's words was a little absurd in the last story, but that's my only criticism.I loved the way Flanagan integrated an impromptu ad for his new series at the end. I'm sure I'll check that out later.VBG

I did not get The Lost Stories at first becase I thought that he was just making a series last longer and didn't sound like it would ad that much. However, my 10 year old grandson is now on volume 9 and is loving the series. His 8 year old brother wants to read it since he likes it so much. Don't know if he has the patients though for a more realistic fantasy story. He has also gotten grandpa interested who is finding it lots of fun and on book 9. When Collin asked about the 11th volume I expained to him my reasons for not getting it and suggested that his dad get it when he has finished the series. A volume or 2 later I found that he is liking the books more and more so I decided to give in and give it a chance. Is it like the other books? No, but they are stories to fill in the areas you may have wondered about while reading the series. They are interesting and are sort of like finding out more about your friends. It was sort of sad when the series ended. I'm glad it did though because I have found a number of series lately that I did not like the last book written and even wished I had not purchased them. So the stories really are a nice closing and I am sure both grandsons and grandfather will enjoy them. I've gone on to the Brother Band chroicles and find them quite enjoyable too.

There are no words eloquent enough to describe how much I have enjoyed every word from the books in this series. This ending was the perfect touch, and a wonderful introduction to The Brotherband Chronicles. This is my third time reading The Ranger’s Apprentice, and I want to share it all with my grandsons.

These stories clear up a few mysteries you may have wondered about, and it is something to read when you have read the last of the ten book series. That way you are let down a bit easier than just being left in the cold cold world of no more Ranger's books. I definitely recommend this book and I highly recommend the 10 book series. It is a great adventure, the characterizations are strong and very endearing (Except for the few bad guys of course). It is also refreshingly free of obscenity and it somehow manages to capture your interest and affection without the normal bait of graphic sex and lurid scenes. I am not prissy by any means but I do really appreciate good story telling without the present fashion of irrelevant sex and gore liberally sprinkled throughout without regard to whether it enhances or detracts from the work.

When it comes to Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice and Brotherband series, I'm a huge fan. I prefer the complete books to these "vignette"-type books, as they do sometimes come across as being slightly thin in terms of the stories (I realize that's by necessity), but I definitely appreciate finding out about some of the "stories behind the stories." I'm not too tough a critic, but since I felt this book wasn't quite 5-star worthy I "forced" myself to give only four stars. If I could, I'd give it 4.5. As I said, I'm a serious Flanagan fan, so that almost hurts me to do so! I loved the Ranger's Apprentice series and can't wait for the next Brotherband installment!!
