This book was hard to put down, and hard to stop thinking about after I finished reading it. The World War II settings and the stories themselves do not lend themselves to the abundant types of humor found in many Alexander McCall Smith novels, but this book has rewards of its own. The stories of different types of love, different types of courage, and different types of risk-taking are skillfully paralleled and interwoven, and for me, made the book uplifting.
I enjoyed this sweet story about WW II. It is VERY low-key. Don't expect a page-turner. I didn't find it to be an examination of individuals or relationships as much as just a sweet overview of what life was like in the later years of WW II. I would have liked a little more depth into the characters but what I did get was enjoyable Being an American and not being born until after WWII it is interesting for me to read about that war and how it was to live in Europe at that time. It was educational especially to read about the German character, Ubi, and what it was like for the German people after the war - their attitudes, etc. There is subtle humor and just a sweetness about this book. I am glad I read it!
With able-bodied young men off to fight in World War II, the tasks of keeping Great Britain fed and clothed falls to civilians. Every inch of available land is planted with some kind of crop. Valerie Eliot works as a land girl – helping out on a nearby farm doing the heavy work for an aging farmer. When a nearby air base contracts with the farmer for as many eggs as his hens produce, Val becomes the delivery person. On her very first visit to the air base Val meet Mike, a U.S. Air Force pilot stationed there. Even as their friendship blossoms, Val finds herself rescuing a Border Collie who is being mistreated by its owner. To keep the pup away from his cruel owner Mike agrees to care for the dog – named Peter Woodhouse – at the base where he becomes a favorite mascot for the fly-boys. Not content with waiting for the return of the pilots, Peter Woodhouse is allowed a spot on their reconnaissance flights. Until the day when the plane Mike is flying crashes behind enemy lines in a ball of flames. All on board are reported as dead.Back in England Val, who is now engaged to Mike and is pregnant with his child, learns of her beloved’s demise. She turns to her aunt and her cousin Willy for support, little knowing that her American pilot and his dog have survived and are being hidden by the Belgian Resistance. They pass their days with the fear of being discovered. But when Peter Woodhouse befriends a German corporal named Ubi, things change. Ubi and Mike form an erstwhile comradeship that will continue long after the war.McCall-Smith’s latest offering teaches us that beneath the skin and our cultural difference we are basically the same. Although distance separates both Mike and Ubi they both take wives and have sons: wives who love them unconditionally and sons who grown into strong young men. The story’s message is this: there is good to be found in everyone.
This strange and rambling story veered between various plot lines that intersected. The characters were real, but rather simply drawn, and I never felt a real depth in them. But it was an enjoyable read. It seemed insubstantial and covered a great many years. Ultimately it didn't completely touch the heart.
This is an important book because it retells the story of WW2, the effects of Hitler and the Russians back then. It provides a human story to world events that many may not be aware of, based on today's political issues. Thank you to Alexander for including this in his oeuvre. Highly relevant and yet sweet and celebratory of values like compassion and kindness and acceptance.
This book is something different from McCall Smith and I liked it very much. I am also glad he is writing books that interest him, not just writing only for the series, which might become tiresome for him. I think this book might be a good intro to McCall Smith for men. He is too good a writer for men to miss out. This book explores the relationships between British and German people during and after WWII.
I eagerly recommend this book, especially to young people who may not have much knowledge of WW2. It's delightful and insightful.
I have always enjoyed McCall Smith’s books especially the No 1 Ladies Detective series. I thought this book lacked the complexity and charm of all his other books.
